Casting Call for FOX’s “Hell’s Kitchen”, Scooper Bowl, Soapbox Derby, Pride Week, Civil War, Parades, River Fesivals, & more!

This Week in ReviewJohnny Monsarrat

Wow! This week I spent researching outdoor movies, theatre, and music. Nobody else comes close to my listing 270 outdoor summer music series, 81 outdoor summer movie series, and 53 outdoor theatre series, all in New England. Make one of these your excuse to travel and see a place in New England you haven’t been to before!

Speaking of randomly wandering New England, this weekend is Trails Day in Connecticut, and you’ll find open houses for historic homes all over.

I hope you are having an awesome week. Now get out there and do something fun!

Cambridge River Festival at Boston Events INSIDER

Cambridge River Festival

I feel like I’m dreaming but it’s real! A parade, puppets, street performers, food, music, performances, and tons of vendors, many of whom will give out free samples. Oh, and the Dell Frozen Lemonade cart will be there, I hope. Last time I bought so many Dell Frozen Lemonade that the guy STOPPED CHARGING ME and just gave me a few for free. 12-6pm, rain or shine. Not for dieters! I went once to this all-you-can-eat fest for charity and ate so much ice cream I nearly hurt myself. Oh, my tummy. It’s the biggest event of its type in the world. 12-8pm daily. (Click ‘more’ for details)Not for dieters! I went once to this all-you-can-eat…

Arlington Soapbox Derby Race Day at Boston Events INSIDER

Arlington Soapbox Derby Race Day

I’ve seen this! Cute kids race homemade cars, old-timey style, through the power of gravity. This is the only one I know of near Boston. Starts at 9am, when normal people are sleeping. Oh wait, these people all have kids. They’re probably woken every day at dawn by the sounds of kids breaking things in the house or generally screaming for no reason. So that’s why they’ve lost all touch with reality and scheduled their event to begin at 9am. (Click ‘more’ for details)I’ve seen this! Cute kids race homemade cars, old-timey style, th…

Dorchester Day Parade

This parade starts at 1pm. Now that’s more like it. Goes up Dorchester Avenue, from Lower Mills to Columbia Road. Last year there was a cookout afterwards. Too bad they didn’t give any details on the website. (Click ‘more’ for details)This parade starts at 1pm. Now that’s more like it. Goes up Dorchester Aven…

Boston Pride Week at Boston Events INSIDER

Boston Pride Week

Put on an Obama mask and LGBT people to buy you beer at this entire week of events! Once I knew this guy with a New York Fire Department t-shirt, and people kept buying him beers even though he was never a firefigthter, and they seemed so happy that he was too embarassed to tell them. This week mostly nothing happens. The best stuff in Pride Week is next week. (Click ‘more’ for details)Put on an Obama mask and LGBT people to buy you beer at this entire week of events!…

Lynn Civil War Sesquicentennial Events at Boston Events INSIDER

Lynn Civil War Sesquicentennial Events

Death match! Who will win in the Roman arena? Lincoln or Douglass? No, not Stephen Douglas, the former presidential candidate, but Frederick Douglass, the freed slave, author, and abolitionist. Maybe they won’t really fight, but they’ll have dinner and Civil War music. So that’s good. Maybe they’ll fight vampires together. (Click ‘more’ for details)Death match! The Fort at No 4 French and Indian War Encampment at Boston Events INSIDER

The Fort at No 4 French and Indian War Encamp…

Get out of our country, French! We Americans never needed you to fight Native Americans. We can do it all on our lonesies. Maybe I could shore up my minimal knowledge of this war by attending this re-enactment, where crazy people, I mean historians, will camp out all weekend dressed as — you guessed it — French people or Indians. So let’s hope you speak some French or Indian. (Click ‘more’ for details)Get out of our country, French! We Americans ne…

Ancient and Honorable June Day Parade at Boston Events INSIDER

Ancient and Honorable June Day Parade

I’m also unclear on the June Day concept. What is it? Why should we care about it? It’s like something important happened long ago, but they couldn’t think of anything to call it but June Day! Anyway, it’s celebrated with a big parade with re-enactors. 12:30pm starting from Boston City Hall. (Click ‘more’ for details)I’m also unclear on the June Day concept. What is it? Why shoul…

So, you know that the moon just went across the sun, but we missed it because it was only viewable from the West Coast. In other words, the coast of bad people who don’t agree that Boston is The Hub of the Universe. Anyway, now you get to see Venus cross in front of the sun. That’s way awesomer. 6pm.
