Thu 8/4WorcesterDavis Farmland’s Megamaze
Boston Events INSIDER, by Johnny Monsarrat
You really need to visit Davis Megamaze, even though you can’t go into the petting zoo and spray park unless you have kids in tow. This is opening weekend to walk through the 3 miles of pathways in a corn field shaped like a maze! They add bridges to give the maze a more complicated, 3D shape, and it’s a lot of fun to get lost and wander around.

There are a ton of different Android platforms so I really need your help for testing. Thanks!

Sat 8/6Boston MetroSummer Arts Fest
This arts fest is for “all ages” and it sounds like they mean it! By this I mean it’s not just for kids. They’ll have chalk art, group mural sketching, and “natural dying”. They mean dying t-shirts, right? Not, like, dying? Naturally?

Sat 8/6Boston MetroHungry Tiger Street Festival
Boston Events INSIDER, by Johnny Monsarrat
The photo for this event made me very excited until I realized that it’s basically a commercial event where stores stay open late and put products on the sidewalk. But they say they’ll have performers. Could it really be the magical evening they claim? Probably not, but it’s always fun to walk around outdoors at night.

Thu 8/4Southeast MassLizzie Borden Museum Annual Re-enactment
Boston Events INSIDER, by Johnny Monsarrat
Entirely in the WTF category, the Lizzie Borden museum will “re-enact” the horrible murder (or maybe just the trial?) for which it is named. Who decided that murder is entertainment? As if to make it worse, they seem quite serious about their “paranormals” which is completely dysfunctional and sad.

Sat 8/6Cape CodCape Cod Highland Festival
Boston Events INSIDER, by Johnny Monsarrat
I’m not even Scottish but I have to say Two Thumbs Up for the Cape Cod Scottish Festival! First of all, I’ve recently visited the venue, the Heritage Museum & Gardens, which has extensive gardens, a car museum, an arts museum, a pirate museum (aRR!!!) and a carousel. That’s highly recommended just by itself! But then add in music, dancing, the “bonniest knees” competition, athletic games, falconry and sheep herding demonstrations, storytelling, and a big bagpipe parade. 10am-5pm.
Heritage Museum & Gardens, Sandwich, MA.

Tue 5/31 – Mon 10/31MaineYork’s Wild Kingdom
Boston Events INSIDER, by Johnny Monsarrat
Yes, it’s in Maine, but it’s less than a 90-minute drive from Boston. It’s York’s Wild Kingdom! It’s an enormous zoo that has all the animals you would want to see with only a few exceptions I can think of. They have tigers, kangaroos, several primates, an elephant you can ride, lions, an area where you can pet and feed deers, a laughing kookaburra, bears, bobcat, parrot, zebra, snakes, llamas, and an entire butterfly enclosure — with alligators (tame, unfortunately, not running around snapping up butterflies)! The only animals I can think of that you’d need to go anywhere else for would be gorillas, giraffes, and chimps (Franklin Park Zoo, Southwick Zoo), and a polar bear (nobody in New England, I think). Best of all, they have plenty of staff to answer questions, and the zoo comes with a small amusement park — mostly kid stuff and traveling carnival style rides, but a few permanent rides like bumper cars, tilt a whirl, go carts, mini-golf, and a small Ferris wheel. York’s Beach is RIGHT off the highway going from Boston to any destination in Maine, definitely your way to break up your long ride.
