Johnny's SummaryFull Moon Hike
Monday, January 9th, 5:00pm to 7:00pm
Explore the forest after the sun has
set. We’ll walk about 3 miles
through the forested trails of
Freetown State Forest under the
light of the Full Moon. January’s
Full Moon is known as the Wolf
Mon. Amid the cold and deep
snows of midwinter, the wolf packs
(now extirpated from
Massachusetts) howled hungrily outside Native American villages.
Thus, the name for January’s Full Moon. Sometimes it was also referred
to as the Old Moon, or the Moon after Yule.
Bring water, wear good hiking shoes, and dress for the weather. Bring a
flashlight, but you may be asked not to use it! Hike is about 3 miles long and
appropriate for adults and children 10+. Meet at the main parking lot on Slab
Bridge Road in Assonet. Rain, snow, or icy trails will cancel. Space is limited
and pre-registration is required. Please call (508) 866-2580 x161 to preregister
or for more information. For park information and directions, please
visit http://www.mass.gov/dcr/parks/southeast/free.htm.
