I really want to see this! Someone with a car please write me. A trebuchet is a kind of efficient catapult. I've never been to this -- I wonder how commercial it is. Come dressed as your favorite character from literarature to the Bookish Ball in Harvard Square. It's free! There's also a parade, a party in Holyoke Center (next to Au Bon Pain) from 7-9 PM, poetry readings, Shakespeare performances, an in-store events including free snacks and book discounts. As if that weren't enough, Harvard Square is also featuring a Native American pow wow. There are dozens of pow wows in New England, but only a couple in the metro area. (Are they serving fry bread? Meanwhile, the rest of Somerville also has local artists opening their homes to the public. It's great fun to walk around and meet everyone, and they say it's the largest open studios in New England. Fri 4/22 - Sat 4/23Metro WestLyrids Meteor Shower
Perhaps the best way to celebrate the Earth is to watch it being pummelled by rocks from space. Finally a meteor shower that you don't have to stay up late to see! This one has a peak Friday, April, 22, 7pm EDT, but between 9pm and midnight EST might be best because the moon won't be up. You should be able to see 5-15 meteors per hour. Drive at night out to a pond or field where there aren't any city lights, to watch the meteors. (The last time I tried this, I didn't plan my destination and got stuck in an area with streetlights. The Higgins Armory is a museum of medeival armor and swords and they are continually having fun events. There's a nationwide rally to support Libya, and the Boston version is in Copley Square from 2-4pm. Got lack of knowledge about Arabs? Get thee to a rally and meet some! I did last month and was warmly received. Copley Square, Boston, MA.
Sat 4/16Metro WestBattle of Lexington Re-enactment & Patriots Day Parades
Instead of watching a marathon while sitting on your butt, how about taking part in the history that made Patriot's Day a holiday? I've listed 22 activities below, and this one's my favorite. I love re-enactments! I've been to this one, the battle that began the American Revolutionary War, and see a bunch more on their website. Crazy people will do a "march" from 4am-5:45am. And then other crazy people, about 2,000 will show up to watch the re-enactment in Lexington at 5:30am. I guess in the old-timey days a lot of battles happened at dawn. Arrive an hour early or bring a stepladder for a good view. Then at 6am, Pancake breakfast and parade follow the re-enactment, Paul Revere Ride Re-enactment. Concerts, etc. and afternoon parade. Like The Sound of Music set in the 1940s and West Side Story set in the 1950s, HAIR is the must-see production that exemplifies the cultural and creative revolution of the 1960s. This is the production that revived HAIR in Boston, moved it to Broadway and won a Tony award for Best Revival of a Musical. So it's worth any price to see and you are supporting a Boston gem when you do. It's directed by the famous artist, Diane Paulus, who co-created The Donkey Show and most recently ran Prometheus Bound in Cambridge.
