September 2010 Archives

Boston Events Insider: Sep 29 - Oct 5, 2010: Canobie Lake Park, Moonlight Corn Maze, Steam Engines, Mercedes, Kerouac, Dr. Horrible, Ig Nobels, and Fall Fests!

Welcome to Boston Events Insider!

I've gotten invited to a press event at Pioneer Village, the live re-enactment center in Salem, which is doing a Halloween special event, Saturday October 2nd in the evening. It's later than the commuter rail runs, so if any one or two people with a car would like to go, email me at johnny@eventsinsider.com. Also send feedback and event ideas. Oh, also Halloween Attractions get going this week -- I track 82 of them! So let me know if you'd like to provide a ride and have me swing some free tix to that, too. I needs me some haunted houses.

This week's top items are below, or see the complete Boston Events Insider.

Free Tickets to Canobie Lake Park & moreFri 10/1 - Sun 10/31Boston Metro
Boston's Events Insider, by Johnny Monsarrat
This week, you missed Conviction with Sam Rockwell doing a Q&A because you're not on the Facebook Group, but you can join by clicking this link. However, it's not too late to win Canobie Lake Park tickets -- I'll have more every week through October, while they have Octoberfest and Screeemfest. And win tickets to Let Me In, Thursday at 11:15pm in Somerville; or Life as We Know It, Mon 10/4 in Boston; or Buried, Wed 9/29 at 7:30pm in Boston; The Social Network, Thu 9/30 at 7pm in Boston. Various. see details on the complete Events Insider
Terrorthon & J. Cannibal's Feast of FleshFri 9/24 - Sat 10/2Boston Metro
Boston's Events Insider, by Johnny Monsarrat
I'm a big fan of the horror-themed Feast of Flesh festival, and after running all week it ends Saturday with a live music, costume competition, zombie apocalypse finale movie. Somerville Theatre, Somerville, MA. see details on the complete Events Insider
Mercedes Day at Larz Anderson MuseumSun 10/3Boston Metro
Boston's Events Insider, by Johnny Monsarrat
The Larz Anderson has another of its classy lawn festivals, this time featuring mercedes. Mercedeseses. Mercs. 15 Newton Street, Brookline, MA.617-522-6547. see details on the complete Events Insider
Annual Yankee Steam-UpSat 10/2Rhode Island
Boston's Events Insider, by Johnny Monsarrat
How about trying something old? Also 19th century, before they had gas engines, they used steam. Can they bring steam engines back to solve global warming? Probably not since all that steam came from coal. This festival showcases working steam engines of every kind. 8am-4pm. New England Wireless and Steam Museum, 1300 Frenchtown Rd., East Greenwich, RI.401-885-0545. see details on the complete Events Insider
Annual Roslindale Day ParadeSun 10/3Boston Metro
Boston's Events Insider, by Johnny Monsarrat
Personally I'd rather be taking in the gentrification nearby in the Roslindale Parade. There doesn't appear to be anything in additional to the parade, despite the name "Roslindale Day". They have a fundraiser where every dollra raised is a vote to who gets to play the "Mayor" in the parade! A road race starts at 12:15pm, then the parade at 1pm. Roslindale, MA.617-327-4886. see details on the complete Events Insider
Moonlight Mazing at Davis FarmlandSat 10/2Worcester
The fantastic corn maze at Davis Farmland is open at night! 2010; 6-10pm. It's a must see. 145 Redstone Hill, Sterling, MA.978-422-8888. see details on the complete Events Insider
Lowell Celebrates KerouacThu 9/30 - Sun 10/3Northern Mass
Boston's Events Insider, by Johnny Monsarrat
Lowell is a city that tries extra hard to bring in tourists (Salem and Quincy are others) This event is based on Jack Kerouac, who is from Lowell MA. His books including "On The Road", encourage wanderlust. This festival looks surprisingly meaty considering it's inspired by book-lovers. They'll have tours of the area, a marathon book reading, music events, road race, and commentary on Jack Kerouac. Lowell, MA. see details on the complete Events Insider
Topsfield FairFri 10/1 - Mon 10/11North Shore
Boston's Events Insider, by Johnny Monsarrat
The Topsfield Fair is the largest and best of Massachusetts agricultural fairs, with a giant pumpkin contest, a blacksmith shop, a cider mill, parades, and a carnival. See pig racing, a petting farm, sand sculptures, milking and bee keeping and wood carving demonstrations, and lots of animal show and pie competition goodness. AAA discount. Topsfield Fairgrounds, Topsfield, MA. see details on the complete Events Insider

Boston Events Insider: 2nd Post this Week: Quidditch, Brides Dancing Thriller, Chainsaw Carves Sculptures, Live Owls

Two posts this week! See the last post too which is also this week. But I couldn't resist an extra post because of Bride Thriller and Quidditch craziness. Enjoy!

And check out Next Bus, which works on the Web or on your handheld to tell you where the MBTA's buses actually are, using GPS, and if you didn't see it in 2008, Auto-tune the news, which is impossible to describe, but good.

Boston's Events Insider, by Johnny Monsarrat
Summer is ending, but the rides at Canobie Lake Park, the big amusement park, are open through the end of October! Revels RiverSingSun 9/19Boston Metro
Boston's Events Insider, by Johnny Monsarrat
Every year this local chorus has a participatory sing-a-long along the Charles River near JFK Street. It's one of my favorite events on the year! Half of you are on the Boston side and the other half on the Cambridge side. Picnic at Winthrop Park in Harvard Square at 5pm and then at 5:45 a procession to the river. Then sing 6-7:15pm. Participatory. Bring a flashlight and a blanket. Over 2,000 attend. No sign-up needed. Free! Weeks footbridge, Charles River, Cambridge, MA. see details on the complete Events Insider
The New Hampshire Highland GamesFri 9/17 - Sun 9/19New Hampshire
Boston's Events Insider, by Johnny Monsarrat
I haven't been to this one but another Highland Games I've visited makes me a real believer! These people know how to party! It's at a major ski resort so they'll probably have gondola rides and hiking trails. They'll have a fiddle championship, band marching, athletics & dance competitions, tons of music and vendors, and "sheepdog trials". Loon Mountain Ski Resort, Lincoln, NH. see details on the complete Events Insider
North American Indian Center Pow-WowSat 9/18 - Sun 9/19Boston Metro
Boston's Events Insider, by Johnny Monsarrat
Although there are pow-wows (native american festivals) all over New England, this is the only one that's actually in Metro Boston. Rain or shine. Outdoors. Bring a blanket or chair. They'll have singing, dancing, drumming, ethnic food and vendors. The Native American Indian Center of Boston, 105 South Huntington Avenue, Jamaica Plain, MA.617-232-0343 x26. see details on the complete Events Insider
Family SculptureFest at The DecordovaSun 9/19Metro West
Boston's Events Insider, by Johnny Monsarrat
The DeCordova is my favorite museum in New England. They always have accessible yet intriguing sculpture, and the museum is surrounded by a park that's dotted with sculptures. Now they're having a huge celebration that's likely their new annual event, a replacement for the old Art in the Park. Meet artists, make sculptures and join in making a huge mural! DeCordova Sculpture Museum, Lincoln, MA. see details on the complete Events Insider
South Boston Street FestivalSat 9/18Boston Metro
Boston's Events Insider, by Johnny Monsarrat
I went to this festival last year in South Boston. It's a ton of vendors and some live music, but they also have a small carnival! 11am-4pm. East Broadway, between I and L Streets, Boston, MA. see details on the complete Events Insider

Battle of Windy Knoll - Civil WarSat 9/18 - Sun 9/19Worcester
