Labyrinth Sing-A-Long8/27Western Mass

Moonlight Paddle on the Charles River9/2 - 9/4Boston Metro

Japanese Culture Day @ Longfellow Historical Site8/30Boston Metro
There are two asian festivals this week, too. I was just at the Longfellow House, and it's definitely worth the trip! Did you know that George Washington used it as his headquarters? No doubt this day of origami, calligraphy, & games will be a great excuse to visit. And its free! 105 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA.617-876-4491. more
Pawtucket Arts Fest & Dragonboat Races8/29 - 8/30Rhode Island
Even better, visit Rhode Island for asian dance, crafts, martial arts, and dragonboat races all day. It's also part of the "Pawtucket Arts Festival", which is really just an umbrella event covering a lot of diverse things, but plenty more is happening in town that day, including French culture, a film festival, and a walking tour. Races 8/29 8am-5pm. Rest of 'festival' goes to 9/13. School Street Pier, School St., Pawtucket, RI.401-724-2200. more
North Country Moose Festival8/28 - 8/30New Hampshire
Looking for an excuse to head up to the hills of New Hampshire? They're a festival with a car show, helicopter rides, the usual street crafts vendors & food & live music, and moose tours!! I went on one once and we saw meeses!!! How exciting! Main Street, Colebrook, NH. more
Boston Comedy Festival8/29 - 9/5Boston Metro
The Boston Comedy Festival isn't exactly weird but it was SO much fun the year I went. Highly recommended! The really big deal is finals night, the last night of the week. Various downtown venues, Boston, MA. more
Plymouth Waterfront Festival8/29 - 8/30South Shore
I've also been to this one. At first I was ready to assume it would be small & uninteresting. But it's actually rather large with a great diversity of activities including the Mayflower ship replica. A great excuse to visit Plimoth Plantation and stop by. 11am-5pm. Plymouth, MA. more

Also Fun
Marshfield County Fair8/21 - 8/30South Shore

MFA Community Day (August)8/28Boston Metro
The MFA is free again. (Thanks!). Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA. more
Welcome Students Block Party9/2 - 9/3Boston Metro
This one I'm listing on the off chance they really will have a "block party", where a street is closed off and there's dancing. But... from the event description it appears to be simply a set of coupons to local businesses. Sweet but not arty. 2-8pm. Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA. more

Recurring Events
Davis Farmland Corn Maze8/6 - 10/31Worcester
It's very important that you check out my favorite (and the biggest and best) corn maze in New England, at Davis Farmland! This year they've gone all out with an Indiana Jones theme. It's across the street from their petting zoo, apple-picking orchard, water spray park, and hay rides (all of which is only for adults who have kids along, boo hoo). 145 Redstone Hill, Sterling, MA.978-422-8888. more
Coppal House Farm Corn Maze ( & Night Maze )8/29 - 10/31New Hampshire
This corn maze is opening this weekend, too! 118 North River Road, Lee, NH.603-659-3572. more
Kimball Farm Corn Maze8/29 - 11/8Northern Mass
Another corn maze. I've been to this one. It's smaller, but worth the trip and very creative with clues in the maze! Kimball Farm Corn Maze, 780 East Broadway, Haverhill, MA.978 521-3990. more

Performance
Cirque du Soleil8/26 - 8/30Boston Metro
I just saw the show yesterday and can highly recommend you go. These are the people who clown around but also do acrobatics in the air on long silk strands or trampolines. A lot of standard circus fare but plenty of over-the-top acts too, all delivered with a classy, theatrical, foreign bent to the staging & costumes. Bayside Expo Center, Boston, MA.800-678-5440. more

Travel
Acton Fair8/27 - 8/30Maine
If you're ever going to visit Maine, the warmest time of the year is the time to go! Here are three excuses. Fiesta Shows will have their traveling carnival in Maine. Acton Fairgrounds, Rt 109, Acton, ME. more

American Folk Festival8/28 - 8/30Maine
... And this is the active one! Bangor, ME. more
Champlain Valley Fair8/29 - 9/7Vermont
This one's clearly the heartland music event of the week, though. Includes a demolition derby, a tractor pull, and a ton of famous names. Champlain Valley Exposition, 105 Pearl St., Essex Junction, VT.802-878-5545. more
Maryland Renaissance Festival @ Silver Springs8/29 - 10/25Maryland
I'm told it's the best Renaissance Faire on the east coast and worth a trip. Crownsville Road, Crownsville, MD. more

Boston Events Insider: Greenfest, Water Gun Battle, Skydiving, Outdoor Elvis & Shakespeare, Carnival

Johnny's List is now 4 years old! If you like the list, please tell some friends. This is how I want to be repaid for the love. Still haven't missed a week yet (although I came pretty close last week!).

A few changes are coming up. I'm shutting down my LJ version of this blog. It's just silly to have two. I'm also going to switch to what WhoFish and Going.com do. Instead of filling your email inbox with a zillion links and getting trapped as spam, I'll send you a few top highlights every week with a link back to WeirdBostonEvents.org for the full list.

Also, I'm building out the website in an attempt to (a) continue with the hand-picked feature events, but add a real, searchable calendar with thousands of regular events and (b) somehow monetize the website, but in a non-annoying fashion, I promise. Anybody want to help me with the new website, with SQL, coding, or Web design?

Finally, come say hello this Thu-Sat at Boston Greenfest on Boston City Hall Plaza. I'll be there maintaining my art project, Wheel Questions.

Here's your week in weird. Enjoy it! Want this weekly? Please subscribe.

-Johnny

Boston Events Insider: Weird Boston Events -- for you!

My computer crashed this week and this is the best I can do to staple the data together. I've added a roundup of local mini-golf places, too. I expect a full data recovery & to be on top by next week's blog. Enjoy it! Want this weekly? Please subscribe.

Anyone traveling to Burning Man in a big van with room for my Wheel Questions project? :)

The Week in Weird
Opening Day for Davis Megamaze8/6Worcester
I love the MegaMaze! It's a huge corn maze with 3 miles of walkways, and because there are crossover bridges, the maze is far more complex than you'd think. It's next to a mid-tier amusement park with a petting zoo, apple-picking orchard (seasonally), hay rides, and water spray park. It's by far the best in New England and arguably the world. You really should go to this opening day celebration, or sometime else.. the maze is open through Halloween. 145 Redstone Hill, Sterling, MA.978-422-8888. more
Open Wedding w/ Royalty8/8Rhode Island
The weird event of the week has got to be this though: a Renaissance costumed wedding that is open to the public. Wow! How do I hear about this stuff? 12pm. Hand fasting. Sword Songs & Moor is doing a wedding that's open to the public? Donation. Royal feast, food, song, merriment, sword swashbuckling demonstration, appearance by King & Queen. Festival, & fun. RSVP in advance preferred. RSVP to Missy Martucci, martuccim@hotmail.com. Foster Woodlands, Rt 6, Foster RI.401-714-4244.

Folkways: A Day in the Life of the Early Colonists8/1 - 8/31North Shore
There's a historical re-enactment village near Salem that I've never visited and seems poorly described. Um, but I'm sure it's great! And they're having a play which itself is poorly described but seems to be some kind of historical thing. Friday - Tuesday from 11am-1pm. Part of Pioneer Village. Pioneer Village, Forest River Park, Salem, MA.978-867-4767. more
Annual Sand Sculpture Contest @ Marthas Vineyard8/5Cape Cod
I was wrong to write that Nantucket has the private beaches. Nantucket is the one with the public beaches! So as a result they are usually less crowded than a Martha's Vinyard, where many are private. Sorry about the mistake! If you are lucky enough to be visiting Martha's Vinyard, stop by the sand sculpture contest! South Beach (right fork), Edgartown, MA.508-627-8134. more

Swim with luminous jellyfish off the Cape8/1 - 8/30Cape Cod
How would you like to swim with harmless but glow-in-the-dark jellyfish? I went to Cape Cod last year on a mission to research this event. Near the end of August, sneak into McGansett Beach, in Falmouth. Or any public beach really. Or boat to Tarpaulin Cove. Choose a calm night, because if there's a lot of waves there may be too much turbulence to see the jellyfish. They are non-stinging, and small, about the size of a goose egg. The creatures glow when there's motion in the water, so if you disturb the water, such as jumping off the McGansett Beach dock, you see glowing. No real website, but you can ask about it at Woods Hole, http://www.whoi.edu, or the National Marine Life Center, www.nmic.org. Falmouth, MA. more
