And there will be plenty of celebrities at the Academy Awards, which you couldn't get a seat to even if you did live in California. However! Here's a fundraiser that will set you back $150. But part of the Oscars is arriving in a tux and "being seen", so it should cost a lot, right? The Langham Hotel, 250 Franklin Street, Boston, MA. more
Oscar Gala @ Brattle TheatreFeb 22Boston Metro

The Week in Weird
Outdoor Explorations: Valentine's Day Moonlight SnowshoeFeb 14Worcester
So you want to do something for Valentine's Day? You open up the newspaper and all you see is a lot of bars. Here is a hint. It is not romantic to take your sweetie to a bar. A restaurant is a little better, but hardly creative. Why not do one of the regular events on Johnny's list as a romantic outing? Here is one: nighttime snowshoeing!!! (Maybe this is why I am single now?) 2009: 5-10pm. Hale Reservation, 80 Carby St., Westwood, MA. more

World Championship Sled Dog RacingFeb 13 - Feb 15New Hampshire
Or go see sled dogs! The bad Valentine's ideas just keep coming! Laconia, NH. more
Special Olympics Passion PlungeFeb 14Boston Metro
I am told that the Passion Plunge does NOT involve mentally challenged kids being encouraged by Greenpeace liberals to dive into freezing water. It's a charity for the rest of us to help support them. That makes more sense. Also at Lake Quinnsigamond in Shrewsbury. Nantasket Beach, Hull, MA. more
Lincoln Impersonator, First Unitarian Church, Providence, RIFeb 12Rhode Island
Because it's Abe Lincoln's 200th birthday, there will be a lot of re-enactments this year. Here is one, in Providence. First Unitarian Church, Providence, RI. more

Annual Sci-Fi Film Festival @ Somerville TheatreFeb 15 - Feb 16Boston Metro
Also geeky is an SF film festival in Somerville. I can't tell from the website if there will be anything interactive, or just the films. 55 Davis Square, Somerville, MA.617-625-5700. more more
Harvard Model United NationsFeb 12 - Feb 15Boston Metro
Equally geeky, but a lot more interesting, is the model UN. These students really take it seriously. And I'm not really sure if you can just stroll in as a member of the public and check it out. I would think so. I get away with a lot just by smiling and looking like I belong. Hynes Convention Center, Boston, MA. more
Lizard Lounge Poetry Jam CelebrationFeb 15Boston Metro
You may get some actual love poetry at the Lizard Lounge's annual anniversary party. Lizard Lounge, 1667 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge, MA.617-547-0759. more more

Someone very important will give a lecture at Harvard. Harvard's Geological Lecture Hall, 24 Oxford Street, Cambridge, MA. more
Darwin Bicentennial lecture by Daniel DennettFeb 12Boston Metro
But even importanter is Daniel Dennett, the famous author of pro-evolution anti-religion books. Framingham State College, Framingham, MA. more
Darwin Day CelebrationFeb 14Worcester
Possibly even better is a lecture plus lunch plus a garden. But it's way out near Worcester. Tower Hill Botanic Garden, 11 French Dr, Boylston, MA. more

Also Fun
Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, "A Venetian ValentineFeb 14Boston Metro
I always put the less interesting things at the bottom. If you really need to do a cocktail event for Valentine's Day, this is the one, at the Gardner Museum. 280 The Fenway, Boston, MA.(617) 566-1401. more

Joe Val Bluegrass FestivalFeb 13 - Feb 15Boston Metro

Fetish Fair FleamarketFeb 13 - Feb 15Boston Metro
Also at a Sheraton near you is the largest conference of people who like sex. A lot. Sheraton Ferncroft Hotel, Danvers, MA. more
Bugs Bunny Film FestivalFeb 13 - Feb 28Boston Metro

Boston Events Insider: Johnny's List of Weird Boston Events: 2/02/09

I changed the main website to http://weirdbostonevents.org but everything should still be working without your needing to do anything. Apparently it caused a one-time hiccup in sending out blog posts. Sorry about that. Now on to the week in weird!

-Johnny

The Week in Weird
Darwin Day "Assassins" Game @ HarvardFeb 6 - Feb 12Boston Metro
The weird event of the week is another Darwin Day activity. Darwin Day isn't actually until February 12. But what better way to demonstrate survival of the fittest than a "circle kill game", or "assassins" game? These games usually involve a bunch of players armed with spoons who track each other down. Harvard, Cambridge, MA. more
Chinese New Year Celebration in Harvard SquareFeb 8Boston Metro
Also a number of winter celebrations happen this week! First off, there's a Chinese New Year celebration in Harvard Square, complete with lanterns and a lion dance. Also, heads up, Mary Chung in Central Square, Cambridge will be having a lion dance too, probably Feb 6-8 but currently unscheduled, so call. Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA. more
Lowell's WinterFest CelebrationFeb 5 - Feb 7North Shore
Another Chinese Lantern Festival is part of this Lowell winter event, where they'll have fireworks, a snowman competition, and a "human dog sled championship". All this, and Quincy doesn't even have their 2009 arts calendar up yet. Woo hoo! Lowell, MA. more
Chelmsford WinterfestFeb 6 - Feb 8Northern Mass
The winter festivals don't just stop, though. Chelmsford, sort of the dumber younger brother of Lowell, is having a weekend of celebrations as well. No fireworks, but a chowder fest, pancake breakfast, snoeshowing, and free public ice skating sound worth a trip. Chelmsford, MA. more
Mount Washington Valley Ice FestivalFeb 5 - Feb 8New Hampshire
If you dare to go up north to the White Mountains, where you can climb a waterfall of ice, and other adventures that all sound insane. International Mountain Climbing School, North Conway, NH. more
Town of Greenfield Winter CarnivalFeb 7New Hampshire
This one is far more sedate, and also in New Hampshire. They'll have a pancake breakfast, a log sawing competition -- need to see that!! -- cardboard sled races, including for adults, dancing, an ice fishing derby, including a mock "ice rescue" demo by firefighters! Greenfield, NH. more
Annual Greenfield Winter CarnivalFeb 6 - Feb 8Western Mass
Neck and neck for the "We on Greenfield" competition is the other Greenfield, MASSACHUSETTS. 2009: Friday night, board game night, a photo contest, and hockey. Saturday, an art exhibit, a road race, snowshoeing, ice skating, a circus, and zydeco music. Sunday, breakfast, a cookie bake-off, a "Siberian huskies demonstration", free ice skating lessons, and they'll have sledding with a big outdoor fire. Ooh, and they're building an entire "snowman village". Greenfield, MA. more
Winter Festival at DCR's Dunn PondFeb 7Northern Mass
State parks are getting into the carnival game, too, with a lot of cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and letterboxing, which is a kind of orienteering. Because what you really want to do is get lost in the forest in the snow with just a compass. Gardner, MA. more
Owl FestivalFeb 7Metro West
