Edaville Railroad's Christmas Festival of Lights Carver, MA
The biggest and best "holiday lights" display in New England. It's quite non-religious, with Santa letting kids sit on his lap but also plenty of generic fare like Frosty the Snowman and a tip of the hat to Hannukah. I don't think you'll see Jesus at all. Come at night and take a 20-minute train ride, or ride the ferris wheel our carousel. They have 7 million lights, and fireworks every Friday night in December. See website for coupons. Daily. I've been and it's a ton of fun even for adults who are kids at heart and like people-watching. Rt 3S to exit 6, Rt 44W for 8 miles to Rt 58 for 8 miles. Pine Street, Carver, MA.877-EDAVILLE. more

Boston Events Insider: Johnny's List of Quirky Boston Events: 11/23/08

Hi!

I have a great time researching this blog, and I have a few other side projects as well. One of them is an art installation and I'm currently applying for a grant. If you know anything about the arts world, please get in touch! I could use some advice. That's at http://crossintotheabyss.org/about.htm and click "Grant Proposal".

Do something fun and weird this week!

-Johnny

The Week in Weird
Thanksgiving & 1830s Wedding at OSVNov 27 - Nov 30Worcester
It's Thanksgiving time, so here are some fun things to do this week if you're not planning a big family event, or if you are and want some space. My favorite re-enactment museum, Old Sturbridge Village, is holding some authentic 1830s style Thanksgiving dinners. Call 508-347-0363 immediately because they will sell out. And they're re-creating an 1830s wedding on Nov 29. Bring any Ocean Spray product label (think cranberry sauce or juice) and get $5 off. 1 Old Sturbridge Village Road, Sturbridge, MA.508 347-3362. more
Wined & Dined in 1809Nov 28Metro West
Getting in on the action is Gore Place, a historic mansion in Waltham, that's going back to 1809 with their feast. 7pm. 52 Gore Street, Waltham, MA.781-894-2798. more
Holiday Murder Mystery at the Astors' Beechwood MansionNov 7 - Dec 19Rhode Island
And if those events are sold out, try the murder mystery dinner in Newport, RI at one of the mansions. The Astor's Beechwood Mansion is the only Newport destination that re-enacts the Victorian era with live actors. I've always wanted to check this out! It's every Friday @ 7pm through Dec 19. Reserve in advance. Astors' Beechwood Mansion, 580 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, RI. more
A Season of Thanks, in DeerfieldNov 29Western Mass
Also re-enacted is a 17th century Thanksgiving celebration with old timey handcraft demonstrations and music by the Springfield Society. 11am-4pm. Hall Tavern Visitor Center, Deerfield, MA.413-775-7127. more
Free Day at Franklin Park Zoo & Stone ZooNov 28Boston Metro
The day after Thanksgiving is free at the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston and the Stone Zoo in Stoneham. The Franklin Park Zoo especially is nice in the winter, open all year 'round, with both indoor and outdoor locations. 1 Franklin Park Road, Boston, MA & Stoneham, MA.617-541-5466. more more
Friday After Thanksgiving Chain ReactionNov 28Boston Metro
Also in the city, at MIT, is a contest to build elaborately complicated machines called Rube Goldberg devices. That's when the candle heats the air going into the balloon, which bursts, surprising the bird who tips over a bucket, sending water onto a cat, who yowls and pulls a string, releasing a bowling ball to roll... you get the idea. MIT Campus, Rockwell Gymnasium, 120 Vassar Street, Cambridge, MA. more
Springfield's Parade of the Big BalloonsNov 28Western Mass
Probably the best event after Thanksgiving is the parade in Springfield. The non-metro towns that try the hardest to lure in tourists are Springfield, Quincy, Salem, and Lowell. You can bet whenever an event happens in any of these places, it'll be good. 11am. Main Street, Springfield, MA.413-733-3800. more
Sing-a-Long Mary PoppinsNov 28 - Nov 30Boston Metro
Here are a few performances I thought strange enough to put up top. Mary Poppins, the classic musical is being shown in Arlington along with printed lyrics so you can sing along. How fun!! Regent Theatre, Arlington, MA. more
BeatleJuice Beatles TributeNov 28 - Nov 29Boston Metro
And I've always wanted to see the local Beatles tribute band. I imagine it's a good look back. JohnnyD's, Somerville, MA. more
The Capitol StepsNov 29Boston Metro
This one is my top choice, if you are a news junkie. It's an evening of musical political satire called the Capitol Steps. I've seen it and it's way more cerebral and clever than anything you've seen on Saturday Night Live. Definitely check this out! I insist. Sanders Theatre, 45 Quincy Street, Cambridge, MA.617-496-2222. more
Thanksgiving Eve Contra DancesNov 27Boston Metro
Some fun exercise is this folk dance in Watertown. I've been to many contra dances, which are line dances meant to facilitate people meeting each other, and they tend to attract intelligent and classy people. It's easy to pick up and, unlike ballroom dancing, if you do it wrong you just laugh and get back in place and nobody seems to mind. Highly recommended. Church, 80 Mount Auburn St, Watertown, MA. more
Gobble Gobble Gobble Road RaceNov 27Boston Metro
For those who are already healthy, 4-mile road race for charity, which begins and ends at The Burren. 9am. If you want to join in, you must sign up in advance. The Burren, 247 Elm St., Somerville, MA. more
Annual Cold Turkey PlungeNov 27Southern Mass
And here's the worst exercise possible. There's nothing like exposing your body to extremes to break down your health. Insane people will be dipping into the ocean at Nantucket Island and running right back out! Apparently it benefits charity. Thanksgiving morning at 10am. Nantucket Athenaeum. 508-228-1110 ext 107. Children’s Beach, Harborview Way, Nantucket Island, MA. more

Also Fun
Fall Festival @ Felix Neck Wildlife SanctuaryNov 28Southern Mass
How can Martha's Vinyard compete? With an event that confuses November with October: the last Fall Festival of the year. Martha's Vinyard, MA. more
Gingerbread House & Cookie Nights at 75 ChestnutNov 28 - Dec 20Boston Metro
A local restaurant is having a ginger bread house making workshop throughout the season, as well as "cookie nights" every Tuesday which are not for those on a diet. 75 Chestnut Street, Boston, MA. more
Wenham Museum's Gingerbread ContestNov 28 - Dec 14North Shore
This one's the one to see though! It's a gingerbread house contest, with all kinds of surprisingly large and intricate displays, include one with model trains. I've been to the Wenham Museum and it's one of these New England-y places in the middle of nowhere with a world class attitude and really worth a visit. 132 Main Street, Wenham, MA. more
Castleberry Fair - WilmingtonNov 28 - Nov 30Northern Mass
OK! Time for the inexorable merchant events. I have tried to select good ones that have some "festival" about them rather than "flea market" or "corporate mall". So here's yet another holiday crafts & foods fair. See Web site for coupon. Shriner’s Auditorium, Wilmington, MA. more
Cultural Survival BazaarNov 28 - Dec 14Boston Metro
This one I've actually been to, and they really do have inexpensive arts and crafts from all over the world. But you won't meet any artists, just merchants. Nov 24-25, 10am-6pm, Cambridge College, 1000 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA. Dec 1-2, 10am-6pm, Episcopal Divinity School, 5 Phillips Place, Cambridge, MA. Dec 8-9, 11am-7pm, Hynes Convention Center, Boston. Various Metro Locations, Boston, MA. more more
Faneuil Hall Marketplace BellringersNov 29 - Dec 20Boston Metro
Boston's tourist mecca is Fanueil Hall, a place as a resident I would normally avoid avoid avoid. However, they do have fun events there. One is this handbell performance. Saturdays, Nov 29-Dec 20. 12pm & 2pm outside the West End between Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market. Bad weather: in Quincy Market, top floor. Faneuil Hall, Boston, MA.617-523-1300. more

Ho Ho Holidays
TubaChristmas Concert at Fanueil HallNov 29Boston Metro
This one's even more fun. It's a concert with over 200 tubas! 2pm. And other shows this month in Ayer, New Bedford, Shelburne Falls, Worcester: see website. Boston, MA. more more
Trellis Lighting at Christopher Columbus ParkNov 24Boston Metro
Also in Boston is this tree lighting event. I've never understood tree lighting. Seriously, you flick a switch, so what? But they'll have 50,000 lights, music performances, and free hot chocolate and pastries. Yum. 5:30 to 6:30pm. Christopher Columbus Park, Boston, MA. more
City of Lights Parade - LowellNov 29Northern Mass
Out there competing for your tourism dollar is the City of Lowell, with a parade. 12-4 Art stroll, (i.e. buy stuff!). 4:30pm. Holiday sing-a-long led by Santa. 6:30 Parade of lights. Merrimack & Central Streets, Lowell, MA. more
Quincy Christmas Parade, Lighting, SantaNov 28 - Nov 30South Shore
Quincy is spacing theirs out, with a lighting ceremony Nov 28 with 10,000 lights, Santa arriving by parachute Nov 29, and a parade Nov 30. It's more of a draw if you put all this stuff together into one day, in my opinion. Quincy, MA.617-773-3317. more
Santa Parade and Fireworks - MedwayNov 29 - Nov 30Worcester
5pm. Parade starts on Holliston Street (near Medway Middle School) and ends at Choate Park on Route 109. Then 6:30pm fireworks over Choate Pond. Santa. Participatory holiday carols. choatefriends@yahoo.com. Choate Park, Medway, MA. more
Santa Arrives in SalemNov 28North Shore
Santa's also coming to Salem. See what I mean about Quincy, Lowell, and Salem? Springfield's event is smarter though because it's non-secular. Anyway, they will have carolers (possibly participatory?). Santa will descend 'off' the Hawthorne Hotel. What, from the roof? In a reversal of the traditional Santa gift-giving role, then Santa will lead everyone to a place they can spend money. Salem, MA. more
Gloucester's Santa Parade & Tree LightingNov 30North Shore
Santa is a busy elf, also coming to Gloucester. Parade starts at 3pm at the State Fish Pier, ends at Kent Circle around 4:30pm. Participatory Christmas carols. Fill out a holiday card to troops overseas and get some free popcorn and hot chocolate. Downtown Gloucester, Gloucester, MA. more
Newburyport Santa Parade & Tree LightingNov 30North Shore
And to nearby Newburyport. 4:30pm starting at the Boardwalk and ending at Market Square. Newburyport, MA. more
Santa's Arrival at Roger Williams Park ZooNov 29Rhode Island
Get this!! Santa is arriving BY HELICOPTER at this one, clearly the event to see. It's at the Roger Williams Park Zoo, which I've seen and is excellent, not at all how you'd imagine in the smallest state in the country. Because it's at a zoo, not a shopping district, it's bound to be more or less non-commercial. 1000 Elmwood Avenue, Providence, RI.401-785-3510. more
Winthrop Holiday Lighting FestivalNov 28Boston Metro
Winthrop is hosting some horse-drawn sleigh rides and Santa will arrive on a fire engine. Santa knows how to make an entrance! (Helicopter still wins though.) With the airport right there, maybe he should arrive by plane. Or VTOL. 3-6pm. Batman will attend as will a giant penguin. Maybe they'll fight. Winthrop, MA. more
Methuen Tree LightingNov 30Northern Mass
It's music, the mayor, hot chocolate, and of course Santa, too. 5:30pm. Methuen, MA. more
Petting Zoo in front of Seasons Four Furniture StoreNov 21 - Dec 28Metro West
I can't tell you how tired I am of seeing merchant events with a stark theme. This one's different, with a petting zoo, Santa, elmo, face painting, singers, balloon animals, etc. 1265 Massachusetts Avenue, Lexington, MA.(781)861-1200. more
Harvard Square Holiday Crafts FairNov 29 - Dec 23Boston Metro
I'm entirely skipping the Harvard Square Merchant event "Sparklefest", because there's no real event, it turns out, just a calendar of the usual stuff in Harvard. However, here's one that looks promising: a church selling goods. I seem to recall that made Jesus angry. Whatever, it's Christmas! Sat 10-7, Sun 12-6, M-F 12-7:30. Daily Dec 18-23. Church at corner of Church St & Mass Ave, Cambridge, MA. more

Recurring Events
1627 Harvest Dinner @ Plimoth PlantationNov 1 - Nov 29South Shore
Plimoth Plantation invites you to join a re-enactment of the original Thanksgiving dinner, with authentic foods, table manners, and hymn singing. Nov 8, 15, 22, 23, 26, 28, 29 at 5:30pm. Reserve in advance. 137 Warren Avenue, Plymouth, MA.(508) 746-1622. more
Shaker Supper @ Hancock Shaker VillageNov 8 - Dec 27Western Mass
A similar experience is available at Hancock Shaker Village, but it's a smaller attraction that I would only recommend if you feel you've "done" Plimoth Plantation. You get a tour by re-enactors, an authentic dinner, and a cappella Shaker music from the 1830s. Nov 8, 29, and Dec 27. 34 Lebanon Mountain Rd., Hancock, MA. more

Performance
The Merchant of VeniceNov 6 - Dec 7Boston Metro
Yet more Shakespeare. One you probably haven't seen. Midway Studios, Fort Point Channel, Boston, MA. more
Rock 'n' RollNov 7 - Dec 7Boston Metro
Tom Stoppard is sort of a modern Shakespeare, having written the script for the movie "Shakespeare in Love" and the play "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead". Now here's his Broadway hit about Eastern Europe, rock music, and history. BU Theatre, 264 Huntington Avenue, Boston, MA. more
Between JobsNov 7 - Dec 12Boston Metro
My favorite improv comedy theatre is hosting a series of nights commenting on unemployment, following in a long tradition of satire going back to Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times. Improv Boston, Cambridge, MA. more
Einstein's Dreams... The Stage PlayNov 18 - Nov 28Boston Metro
A play adaptation of Alan Lightman's best-selling novel. I very much enjoyed the novel, which is fantastic, but I have NO IDEA how they're going to convert such surreal happenings into a play. May be worth checking it out. But definitely read the book. Central Square Theater, 450 Mass Ave., Cambridge, MA.617-57 MY CST. more
Robin WilliamsNov 24 - Nov 25Boston Metro
Before appearing in a series of sappy family movie comedies, Robin Williams was quite edgy and good. Find out for yourself at this night of stand-up. Orpheum Theatre, One Hamilton Place, Boston, MA. more
The NutcrackerNov 28 - Dec 28Boston Metro
And... It's The Nutcracker. If you're ever going to check out ballet (I haven't), this would probably be it. Opera House, Boston, MA. more

This week I'm listing the region of every event, so you can more easily find what's local and what you can get to on the commuter rail. There's a great website at http://mbta.com if you want to see subway, bus, and commuter rail times.

The Week in Weird
America's Hometown USA Thanksgiving CelebrationNov 21 - Nov 23South Shore
It's the weird event of the week! It's immodest to call Plymouth "America's Hometown" but when you see what they have planned for the weekend before Thanksgiving it's hard not to be impressed and want to go. There's a concert Friday night, then the parade starts Saturday at 10:30am with a military flyover, and apparently includes re-enactors in period costume from the 17th century up to today. Fashionistas descend! There's a food festival and another concert Saturday evening. They'll also have an encampment of various military re-enactors, American, British, and a blacksmith. Plymouth, MA.508-746-1818. more
Frog Pond Opening Day & Skate PerformanceNov 19Boston Metro
All winter, there is an ice skating rink on Frog Pond in Boston Common that is refigerated and open in warm or cold weather through March. For opening day, they bring professional ice skaters to perform, the Mayor will give a speech, and skating for the day is free! It's a wonderful event and highly recommended. 5:30pm. Boston Common, Boston, MA.617 635-2120. more more
MIT "Kick Butt" contest for the Great American SmokeoutNov 20Boston Metro
Sometimes all you need is an excuse to stop procrastinating. That's why they've made November 20 the Great American Smokeout, to encourage people to stop smoking. MIT is getting into the spirit with strange fantastical machines that make a big production out of automatically extinguishing a cigarette. 12-2pm. MIT, Building 13 Lobby, Cambridge, MA.617-253-4481. more more
Battle of the LawyersNov 20Boston Metro
This one's sort of an open studios for lawyers. Are you curious what trial lawyers actually do and say, off the movie screen and in real life? They will show us in a series of lectures called "Battle of the Lawyers". 5:30pm-8pm. Millstein Hall Auditorium, 10 Winter Place, Boston, MA.617-218-8211. more
Metropolis the Silent Film, with MusicNov 20Boston Metro

Water Purification Plant TourNov 17Boston Metro
Have you ever noticed the water plant in West Cambridge? I have! They are giving a tour! It's almost as good as sneaking around there on your own. Free but register in advance. 6-7:30pm. Walter J. Sullivan Water Purification Facility, 250 Fresh Pond Parkway, Cambridge, MA.(617) 349-4793. more
Imperial Court "CoronationNov 20 - Nov 23Boston Metro
There's a local LGBTA group that has a masquerade charity ball to fight AIDS as well as a "coronation", which is not described but is probably a gay pride parade king & queen or something. Boston Park Plaza Hotel, Boston, MA. more
Huun Huur TuNov 22Boston Metro
From a country you've never heard of, Tuva, is a type of singing where one person produces 2 or 3 simultaneous notes! Now that's entertainment. Somerville Theatre, Somerville, MA. more
Public Observatory Night - SalemNov 17Boston Metro
A number of local telescope observatories have public stargazing nights, monthly or weekly. Here are a few! You should always call ahead to confirm that the weather's good. This one's Mondays, weather permitting, at Salem State College. Call in advance. Salem, MA.978-542-6452. more
Public Observatory Night - BrooklineNov 18Boston Metro
Tuesday evenings, but NOT June-Aug, weather permitting, call ahead. 20 Newton Street, Brookline.617-454-2718. more
Public Observatory Night - NewtonNov 18Boston Metro
Tuesdays 7-9pm. Or 617-454-2718. The "best telescope on the East coast" they claim. 20 Newton Street, Brookline, MA.617-454-2795. more

Public Observatory Night - Museum of Science BostonNov 21Boston Metro
Or, every Friday evening at the Museum of Science, Boston. It's free. Science Park, Boston, MA.617-589-0267. more
The New England Fan ExperienceNov 21 - Nov 23Boston Metro
It's a shame that this geek conference has such a poor website, giving me the impression the event itself may be disorganized. They'll have panels, vendors, and costuming activities on sci-fi, anime, and gaming. Hyatt Regency, Cambridge, MA. more
My Dearest Friend: Letters of Abigail and John AdamsNov 18Boston Metro
As I mentioned last week, this event will be a reading and Q&A about the former presidential family. Free but RSVP to attend. Social Law Library, 1 Pemberton Square, Boston, MA.617-226-1311. more
Salem Open StudiosNov 22North Shore
It's yet another open studios, this time being an excuse to walk around Salem, which is full of fun touristy and classy things to do. I would recommend particularly the House of Seven Gables and the Peabody Essex Museum. 10am-6pm. Various locations, Salem, MA. more
Portsmouth, NH Holiday Arts TourNov 21 - Nov 23New Hampshire
Portsmouth, NH is having open studios as well, but by adding the name 'holiday' they're hoping you think Xmas and buy buy buy some artwork. Various locations, Portsmouth, NH. more

Also Fun
Paradise City Arts Festival (Fall)Nov 21 - Nov 23Metro West
This art show is commercial, but it's big and worth a mention. I would much more recommend the open studios. Rt 495 to exit 24B (Rt 20W). F 10-5, S 10-6, S 11-5. Royal Plaza Trade Center, Marlborough, MA.800.511.9725. more

Are you a writer? A wannabe? This festival may interest you, and surprisingly, several famous writers will attend. (Now if only famous publishers would attend!). Dilboy VFW Hall, 371 Summer St., Somerville, MA. more
Harvest Moon Fair @ Arlington UU ChurchNov 22Boston Metro
October is over but here's just one more harvest festivals. I don't normally list non-ethnic church events, but UU is pretty harmless! It's small but has a big heart, I bet. 630 Massachusetts Avenue, Arlington, MA.781-648-3799. more
Casino Royale BallNov 22Rhode Island
Do you secretly think you could be James Bond? Or an exotic femme fatale? Here's your chance to find out. The only catch: you need to cough up $250 for charity. Darn those charities, they run such interesting events but they're usually expensive. RI Convention Center, Providence, RI. more
New England Punk & Metal FestivalNov 23Boston Metro
This seems to be a real festival, with vendors and opportunities for local bands to strike a record deal. The Palladium, Worcester, MA. more

Xmas Stuff
Faneuil Hall Tree LightingNov 22Boston Metro
I cannot protect you from Christmas. It is coming. It is coming like a steamroller hurtling from a plane which was thrown off a comet streaking in to blast the economy with purchasing goodness and ho ho ho-ing. However, similar to Halloween I am going to dump all the Xmas stuff into a separate section for ease of ignoring. Getting a jump on the season is Fanueil Hall, which can't even wait to Thanksgiving. Entertainment all day and tree lighting at 5:30pm. Faneuil Hall, Boston, MA. more
Edaville Railroad's Christmas Festival of LightsNov 14 - Jan 4South Shore
Also unable to wait is the biggest and best "holiday lights" display in New England. Pine Street, Carver, MA.877-EDAVILLE. more

Recurring Events
MASS MoCA (Museum of Contemporary Art)Jan 1 - Dec 31Western Mass
As a bit of filler here are some regularly recurring events. The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (Mass MoCA) is continually surprising and modern, yet accessible and not snooty. They have tons of fun events as well that you can use as an excuse to visit. Highly recommended. Their new exhibit will only be available for the next 25 years, so hurry out there! 87 Marshall St, North Adams, MA.413-662-2111.. more
Springfield Museums (Science, History, Art)Jan 1 - Dec 31Western Mass
Nearby in Springfield, MA are a set of museums side-by-side that are jointly worth the trip, in science, arts, and history. They have a number of "Family Science Adventures", and by family, they mean your kids will love it and you'll be bored, but at least you're inside a museum and that's entertaining. 21 Edwards Street, Springfield, MA.413-263-6800 or 800-625-7738. more
Amherst College Museum of Natural HistoryJan 1 - Dec 31Western Mass
Did you know that the world's largest collection of dinosaur footprints is in Amherst? How great is that! I've seen it and it's highly recommended. And it's free. Rt 9 & Rt 116, Amherst, MA.413-542-2165. more
1627 Harvest Dinner @ Plimoth PlantationNov 1 - Nov 29South Shore

Shaker Supper @ Hancock Shaker VillageNov 8 - Dec 27Western Mass
A similar experience is available at Hancock Shaker Village, but it's a smaller attraction that I would only recommend if you feel you've "done" Plimoth Plantation.
Boston Events Insider: Johnny's List of Quirky Boston Events: 11/09/08

You know something is up when a blog with 27 ideas seems small. There's just not that much going on in New England, unless you're a professional construction worker or wannabe crime novelist. This would be a great week to visit a museum (try to visit one that is holding an event of some sort) or take in a theatre show. To flesh out this week's list I have added some ideas below. Or just grab my entire museum and venues and events spreadsheet from http://crossintotheabyss.org/johnnys-list.xls

The Week in Weird
Boston Veterans Day ParadeNov 11Everywhere
The weird events of the week are all the Veterans Day parades. Boston's begins at 1pm on November 11 on Boston Common and goes down Boylston Street to City Hall Plaza. They are all over Massachusetts, Abington, Amesbury, Braintree, Canton, Carver, Cohasset, Duxbury, Halifax, Hingham, Lexington, Marshfield, Milton, Pembroke, Plymouth, Quincy, Rockland, Scituate, Uxbridge, Weymouth, Whitman, Worcester, and probably more. Various, Everywhere.(617) 635-4455. more more
My Dearest Friend: Letters of Abigail and John AdamsNov 18Boston, MA
Former US President John Adams in the 18th century of course was a local from Quincy, Massachusetts. He had a powerful First Lady, Abigail Adams, who was sort of the Hilary Clinton of the time. Except romantic. When John Adams was away on business, at the Constitutional Convention, they wrote a series of love letters. This event will be a reading and Q&A about the Adams family. (Not the Addams Family.) Free but RSVP to attend. Social Law Library, 1 Pemberton Square, Boston, MA.617-226-1311. more
Storylab @ Club PassimNov 17Cambridge, MA
Storytelling is not just for kids! Once in a while, on a Monday, Club Passim in Harvard Square will hold a night of storytelling for adults. Think of it like a one-person theatre show, except the old adage "show, don't tell" is violated and the narrator steals the show and the actors never get to the stage. I've seen it and it's worth a view! 26 Church Street, Cambridge, MA.617-492-7679. more
New England History FestivalNov 15Watertown, MA
Although their website is lacking, this history festival seems to be packed with interesting speakers and re-enactors on Olde Timey New Englandly topics such as the puritans, the original Mother Goose, the Salem witch trials, and the "crime of the century", the Brinks robbery. Hibernian Hall, 151 Watertown Street., Watertown, MA. more
An Evening of Illumination @ OSVNov 15Sturbridge, MA
Also re-enactment-tastic, Sturbridge Village is bigger than and just as good as Plimoth Plantation. They are continually having events and this one is at night using 19th century lights. I'm sure it's beautiful. 1 Old Sturbridge Village Road, Sturbridge, MA.508 347-3362. more
The Portsmouth Comic Book ShowNov 16Portsmouth, NH
Do you secretly long to be Peter Parker? Check out this minor comic show in New Hampshire. 10am-3pm. Best Western Hotel, Portsmouth, NH. more

Also Fun

Here's a cultural festival with some punch. Although it's essentially a performance of upbeat South Asian music and dance, by putting it into a competition it's more fun for everyone. Orpheum Theatre, 1 School St, Boston, MA.617-679-0810. more
Irish Film FestivalNov 13 - Nov 16Cambridge, MA
It's yet another film festival, although several of the writers & directors will appear in person for Q&A. Brattle Theatre & Harvard Film Archive, Cambridge, MA. more

Imagine a festival based on really old books, the kind whose copyright has expired and you'll be able to find online by 2010. Here's your last chance to see some original texts while children still know what a 'book' is. They'll have talks by book collectors and serious workshops for hobbyists and professionals. Hynes Convention Center, Boston, MA.617-954-2000. more
Boston International Fine Art ShowNov 13 - Nov 16Boston, MA
Me: "Do you like art?" You: "It's fine." Perhaps you're a target for the Fine Art Show. This seriously commercial event seems to target people with money who actually buy art. Boston Center for the Arts, Boston, MA. more
Creating and Destroying the Rules of Dance" - A Dance WorkshopNov 16Salem?
12-4pm. This appears to be a workshop on dance theatre, but the type of dance you'll learn is not described. It may involve blue paint. more
Vegetarian Thanksgiving @ Winslow FarmNov 15Norton, MA
It's not Thanksgiving yet, but if you want to peep and meet some non-meat people, a local farm is offering a vegetarian version of the holiday. I've seen the venue and it's a nice place for a stroll with a surprisingly large petting zoo. Winslow Farm, 37 Eddy Street, Norton, MA.508-285-6451. more
Edaville Railroad's Christmas Festival of LightsNov 14 - Jan 4Carver, MA
It's definitely not Xmas yet, but the tide is coming like a tsunami and I can't hold it back! This is the biggest and best "holiday lights" display in New England. Come at night and take a 20-minute train ride, or ride the ferris wheel our carousel. They have 7 million lights, and fireworks every Friday night in December. See website for coupons. Santa lets children sit on his lap, too. Daily. I've been and it's a ton of fun even for adults who are kids at heart and like people-watching. Rt 3S to exit 6, Rt 44W for 8 miles to Rt 58 for 8 miles. Pine Street, Carver, MA.877-EDAVILLE. more

Did you miss Salem in October, or want to avoid the crowds? Here are some ideas on things to do. The Salem Witch Museum is a small museum on the Salem Witch Trials, plus an immersive presentation where you sit surrounded by lights and dioramas. Peabody-Essex MuseumJan 1 - Dec 31Salem, MA
The Peabody-Essex is a world-class art museum in the center of Salem, a nice break amongst all the 17th century New England fare. They are continually having art workshops, demonstrations, and musical events. Highly recommended! East India Square, Salem, MA.978-745-9500. more

Boston Events Insider: Johnny's List of Quirky Boston Events: 11/02/08

The year in events starts in the Spring with outdoor festivals, and ends in September, although we have Halloween to keep us going. During the low period, now and in early 2009, I'm going to add a few museums and regularly recurring events for you to sample.

I'm going to start a new habit of writing the blog on Sunday, because I have a spot on a radio show on Sundays now. I will sometimes add a Thursday update if there's some amazing addition I need to get out.

The Week in Weird
Carousel on Boston CommonOct 25 - Nov 9Boston, MA
The event of the week is that there's a carousel on Boston Common! The merry-go-round is open daily from 11am to 9pm, next to Frog Pond, and they're calling it a "trial" which means if it's popular perhaps they'll make it permanent. Only $2. Boston Common near Frog Pond, Boston, MA. more
Election DayNov 4Everywhere
Yep, it's election day. Can't find your polling station? Try this site, which doesn't list polling hours but they're all 7am to 8pm, with a few opening as early at 5:45am. Various Balloting Stations, Everywhere. more

Legio III Cyrenaica Roman Legion @ Higgins ArmoryNov 8Worcester, MA
Now on to the weekend. The Higgins Armory is always worth a trip. It's one of these perfect places that both kids and adults enjoy, and see and learn about the armor and weaponry from ancient times. They are continually having fun events. This weekend, re-enactors play warriors from Ancient Rome. 100 Barber Ave, Worcester, MA.508-853-6015. more
Allston/Brighton Open Studios (Boston Open Studios)Nov 8 - Nov 9Allston, MA
An open studios is an excuse to walk around town, visiting artists in their studios or private homes. It's interesting to chat directly with the artists rather than merchants, and of course they hope you'll buy something. This one seems pretty small, being focused on just two buildings. 12-6pm. 1 Braintree Street, Allston, MA.617.254.3333.. more
Roslindale Open StudiosNov 8 - Nov 9Roslindale, MA
This one is clearly the open studios to go to. It's spread all across Roslindale so you get a nice Fall walk, and they're having a few events including live music and a "musical instrument petting zoo". 12-6pm. See website for map, Roslindale, MA. more
1627 Harvest Dinner @ Plimoth PlantationNov 1 - Nov 29Plymouth, MA

A Quilters' GatheringNov 6 - Nov 9Nashua, NH
This is the largest annual quilting show in New England, with competition entries from all over the world. I know what you're thinking, that it's probably boring. I've actually been to a quilting show and it was fun with the right attitude. The quilts are genuinely works of art, not grids of plaid. Sheraton Hotel, Nashua, NH. more
Hampton Beach Holiday Kite FlyNov 8Hampton, NH
While you're in New England, stop by this small-sized kite flying event. It's harder to fly a kite than you might think, and you can meet and learn from some experts. They'll probably sell kites on-site. Hampton Beach, Hampton, NH. more
Armenian FestivalNov 8 - Nov 9Cranston, RI
I've never heard of an ethnic event with an Armenian theme before, so even though this one's small, it may be worth a visit. Good Vibrations Amateur Erotic Film FestivalOct 30 - Nov 7Brookline, MA
I tried to save this for last, but it's certainly strange. This "toy" store is sponsoring a festival of films made by local amateurs at the Coolidge Corner Theatre, with a pre-party in the store itself. They have a reputation for being tasteful, um, so I've heard. Coolidge Corner Theatre, Brookline, MA. more
Midnight Seduction Flirting PartyNov 8Cambridge, MA
Speaking of tasteful sexuality, the Adult Site Moderator of the Boston Phoenix said that Midnight Seduction party "was really the best. I was very pleasantly surprised by it and it was very interesting and fun... a very good way for people to get a taste of it and to see how far they’d like to go with everything." Wha'd'ya know. The next one is Saturday. RSVP in advance. more

Also Fun
Boston Jewish Film FestivalNov 5 - Nov 16Brookline, MA
Also at the Coolidge Corner Theatre, but I'm sure much more tasteful, is the Boston Jewish Film Festival. But wait! Their home page has two nudes hugging. There doesn't seem to be an actual physical event, but you can win a month of free food if you win this story-writing contest. Online only?, Cambridge, MA. more
Christmas Festival & Gingerbread House CompetitionNov 7 - Nov 9Boston, MA
We live nearly 10% of our lives in a "Christmas Land" that merchants stretch from Thanksgiving to the holiday. Except for a few mavericks who want us to start shopping right after Halloween. Who will be first? It's an actual Xmas Festival at a major tradeshow venue in Boston. It's hideously commerical, sort of the opposite of an "open studios" event, but they will have a gingerbread contest with giant displays. 12-7pm. See website for coupon. Seaport World Trade Center, 200 Seaport Blvd, Boston, MA. more

Recurring Events
Davis Farmland & Megamaze (& Night Maze)Sep 2 - Nov 9Sterling, MA
