Boston Events Insider: Johnny's List of Quirky Boston Events: 10/27/08

Here's your week in weird! This week's also all about Halloween, so I'm not creating a separate section. Have fun!

-Johnny

The Week in Weird
Day of the Dead Festival @ Forest Hills CemeteryNov 2Jamaican Plain, MA
My #1 favorite event of the entire year is the Day of the Dead Festival at Forest Hills Cemetery. That says quite a lot given that I'm tracking 1600 annual events now. Just go. They leave out the candy skeletons and taco vendors. Instead, it's an ancient Mexican night of dance and music that the audience can join. Come with items to place on a shrine. 4-6pm.Rain or shine. Always on Nov 2. 95 Forest Hills Avenue, Jamaican Plain, MA.617.524.0128. more
El Dia de Los MuertosNov 2Cambridge, MA
Beforehand, why not check out the dance and food at this alternative Day of the Dead festival. This one involves skull decorating for kids and seems like serious and spiritual. 1-4pm. Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center, Cambridge, MA.800.511.9725. more
Day of the Dead @ Peabody MuseumNov 2Cambridge, MA
There's also an event at Harvard's Peabody museum. The family event is 1-4:30pm, with a skull decorating workshop and "dancing chickens". Then a fiesta 6-9pm. Peabody Museum, Cambridge, MA. more
Harvard Scare!Oct 31Cambridge, MA
Also in Harvard Square is a completely undocumented event called "Harvard Scare", plus the usual restaurant and bar events. Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA. more
The Dark Night Halloween party at the New England AquariumOct 30Boston, MA
I spoke with someone on the phone about this one. It's not just the film "The Dark Knight". It's a party at 7pm sponsored by WBOS music, prizes, and a costume contest, Then the movie at 8:45pm in the IMAX theatre. It's half-off tickets for those in costume. New England Aquarium, Central Wharf, Boston, MA.617-973-5200. more
Halloween FireworksOct 31Salem, MA
It's really worth the visit to Salem if you can make it, and they'll have extra commuter rail trains on Halloween. To encourage revelers to return home, they will end the night with a musical fireworks finale around 10:30pm. Near Salem Depot, Salem, MA. more
Wiccan Samhain Magick Circle CeremonyOct 31Salem, MA
Also in Salem, this is a pagan celebration if you're curious what that might be like. Procession starts at 4:30pm at Nu Aeon. Then Gallows Hill Park at 5:30pm. Then candlelight walk at 7:30pm into Salem Downtown. Pronounced "sah-wen". I called and this is definitely happening. Open to the public. They suggest you bring a lantern or candle in glass. 978-745-8668. more
Hawthorne Hotel's Costume BallOct 31Salem, MA
If you can afford it, no doubt this costume ball is the place to be Halloween evening. It may sell out, so buy tix in advance. $85. Hawthorne Hotel, Salem, MA. more
Official Salem Witches' Halloween BallNov 1Salem, MA
This is essentially the same ball but on a different day, so I guess they decided to name it differently. Hawthorne Hotel, Salem, MA. more
ICA Masked Costume PartyOct 31Boston, MA
If you have $100 to spare, here's another expensive masquerade ball, and it's right in Boston, and not a bar. The ICA is amazing and well worth a visit. Institute for Contemporary Art, Boston, MA. more
Annual Mayness & Madness Halloween BashOct 31Boston, MA
Here's another party, run by a young professionals (i.e. singles) group. McGann's, 197 Portland St, Boston, MA. more
Tomes of Terror - Halloween Live Audio TrilogyOct 29 - Nov 1Somerville, MA
This is a spooky theatre event where they act out an old radio broadcast. I've been twice and it's really unique and worth seeing! 7:30pm. Unity Church of God, 6 Williams Street, Somerville, MA.617.669.4391. more
Rocky Horror Halloween Special - BostonOct 31 - Nov 1Cambridge, MA
Also theatrical, the Rocky Horror Picture Show is a bad old movie that fans like to dress up and mock and re-enact live on stage while the film plays. This Halloween, the local groups will also do a special pre-show. I went last year and it was fantastic! Times are not given but I assume the show is at midnight. Loews Theatre, 11 Church St, Cambridge, MA. more
Rocky Horror Halloween Special - RIOct 31Foxboro, MA
And another group is doing it at the Zeiterion Theater, New Bedford MA. Orphieum Theater, Foxboro, MA. more
Ghosts on the BankeOct 30 - Oct 31Portsmouth, NH
The weird just keeps going! Strawbery Banke is one of four re-enactment museums with live actors in New England. They'll have an outdoor movie, horse-drawn wagon rides, a bonfire, and lots of actors both piratical and ghostatical. A quick drive up from Boston. Marcy Street, Portsmouth, NH.603-422-7514. more
New England Institute Pi Sigma Eta Haunted HouseOct 29Newton, MA
I managed to find another haunted house in the metro area! This one's at Mount Ida College in Newton. 8-11pm. Mount Ida College in the NEI building, 777 Dedham St., Newton, MA. more
Spooky Skate @ MITOct 31Cambridge, MA
At MIT, they'll set up a skating rink and a lot of people will come in costume. Last year they had arts & crafts and lots of free food. It doesn't appear to be MIT community only. 8pm-12:30am. MIT, Cambridge, MA. more
AntiMorris at SunsetOct 31Somerville, MA
Even weirder, join up for "Pumpkin Carols" and see morris folk dancing in Somerville. 5pm. Somerville Community Growing Center, on Vinal Ave, Somerville, MA.617-718-9623. more
Beacon Hill With a BOO!Oct 31Boston, MA
Get ghost stories on this spooky walking tour of Boston. No reservations required. Meet at 5:30pm. 90 minutes. This one's not just for kids. State House, front steps, Boston, MA. more
Tales of the Night @ Drumlin FarmOct 29 - Oct 30Lincoln, MA
Also not just for kids, a local state park is having a hayride, haunted house, and walks in the forest. Bring a flashlight. Wed/Thu 6:30-8:30pm. 208 South Great Road, Lincoln, MA.781-259-2200. more
Breakfast with George WashingtonNov 1Exeter, NH
Let's take a break and do some non-Halloween events. In this one, a re-enactor plays George Washington at 9:30, 10:30, and 11:30am. Also they serve breakfast. Folsom Tavern, One Governors Lane, Exeter, NH.(603) 772-2622. more
Brockton Train ShowNov 2Brockton, MA
There aren't very many events for model train enthusiasts near Boston. But here is one. Come see the trains and, um, more trains. 10am-4pm. Temple at Pearl & Torrey Sts, Brockton, MA.508-583-5810. more
Boston Comic ConNov 2Boston, MA
Sure to be fun -- but only for the right personalities -- is Boston Comic Con. It seems to be quite a real event, with workshops, artists, lectures, as well as numerous vendors. 10am-5pm. Back Bay Events Center, 180 Berkeley St, Boston, MA.508-320-1440. more
Gorefest at Improv BostonOct 23 - Oct 31Cambridge, MA
My favorite improv comedy club is doing a spoof on slasher films that have a lot of blood. It sounds pretty gross, but it might be funny if you're totally inured to horror flicks. 8pm but some days also 10pm. Improv Boston, 40 Prospect St, Cambridge, MA.617-576-1253. more
Election Night" @ Improv BostonNov 4Cambridge, MA
Much more my style, and also at Improv Boston, if you are a news junkie and want to hang out with like minds and hear improvised political commentary on the election, try this event. From 8pm to last call. Food, drink, prizes, live music, comedy. Improv Boston, 40 Prospect St, Cambridge, MA.617-576-1253. more
Election DayNov 4Everywhere
Don't forget to vote! Your Halloween hangover should be over by now. Various Balloting Stations, Everywhere. more

Also Fun
Connors Farm Haunted Corn MazeOct 31Danvers, MA
This is the final "night maze" night at Connors Farm. 10pm. 30 Valley Road (Rt. 35), Danvers, MA.978-777-1245. more
Waltham Mills Open StudiosNov 1 - Nov 2Waltham, MA
This Open Studios is at a single location, so I'm sure it's fun with plenty of actual artists (not merchants)... but you don't get to stroll around the entire town. 144 Moody Street, Waltham, MA. more
Boston Vegetarian Food FestivalNov 1Boston, MA
Although this is a commercial event, with lots of vendors, there will also be lectures and a lot of education if you're curious (or already into) the vegetarian lifestyle. 10am-6pm. Reggie Lewis Athletic Center, 1350 Tremont St, Boston, MA.617-541-3535. more
Celebrating John Belushi" FundraiserNov 1Arlington, MA
John Belushi was a comedian on Saturday Night Live who died in 1982 from addiction. So a local comedian is portraying Belushi in a comedy night to benefit entertainers with addictions. It looks pretty good, and Belushi's widow will be in attendance. Regent Theatre, Arlington, MA. more
Interrogate This: Psychologists Take On TerrorOct 30Boston, MA
How appropriate to Halloween is a film and talk on the use of psychologists to direct the interrogation of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. The filmmaker and some psychology experts will attend and speak. There will also be screenings November 11 and December 9 at different locations. See the website. Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology, 221 Rivermoor Street, Boston, MA.617-426-6668. more
Book Talk on Salem Witch TrialsOct 31Boston, MA
Another good one -- I lean more into book talks when it's cold outside -- is a book on how the tragedy of the Salem Witch Trials has been used in political fighting for centuries. Free but call to reserve a ticket. Boston Athenæum, 10 1/2 Beacon Street, Boston, MA.617-720-7600. more
Constantine's Sword" film & talkOct 30Boston, MA
One more. Do you think religion can lead to war? Can scramble politics? Millions of fundamentalists think so too. A local professor speaks on this topic and then a film. C. Walsh Theater, Suffolk University, Boston, MA.617-557-2007. more
Fright Night @ Joppa FlatsOct 29Newburyport, MA
OK, now let's downshift into Halloween events that (as far as I can tell) are targeted to small kids. I don't have any kids (and neither do many of my 20-something readers) but it can be fun and relaxing to just show up -- with NO kids in tow! -- and watch everyone having a good time in their cute costumes. 6-8pm. I have no idea what this event is. A kids haunted house, I think. Pre-register. 1 Plum Island Turnpike, Newburyport, MA.978-462-9998. more
Central Scare in LynnOct 30Lynn, MA
Also for kids, they'll have a haunted house and costume contest, ghost stories and mask-making. This one seems to be theater-based and not a raw commercial event. more
Plymouth Pumpkin FestivalOct 31Plymouth, MA
Unlike this one, which pretty much *is* a commercial event. Many merchants will be open for trick or treating. Cute kids will come. 4-7pm. Downtown, Plymouth, MA. more
Howl-O-WeenNov 1Hillsborough, NH
It really can't compete with this event though, which is a costume parade for both pets and family. And when they say family, as usual, they mean kids. Butler Park, Main Street, Hillsborough, NH.(603) 464-2112. more
Ghost Hunting at the Charles River Museum of IndustryOct 30 - Nov 1Waltham, MA
Local robot enthusiasts have turned this museum into a haunted house that is "family friendly", i.e. not to scary, for kids to go on a ghost hunt. 5:30-9:30pm. 154 Moody Street, Waltham, MA.(781) 893 5410. more
Haunted Attic Tour @ The Old ManseOct 29 - Oct 31Concord, MA
This one's also a kids event with genuine adult appeal. They set up a murder mystery with live actors and you get to explore this historic mansion looking for ghosts and clues. The Old Manse, 269 Monument Street, Concord, MA.978-369-3909. more
Family Wagon Rides @ Gore PlaceOct 31Waltham, MA
Gore Place, another historic mansion, is offering wagon rides on Halloween. It's on one calendar but not the other, on their website, so call ahead. 6pm. 52 Gore Street, Waltham, MA.781-894-2798. more
Franklin County CiderDayNov 1 - Nov 2Greenfield, MA
I'm usually skeptical of single food events. This one is occurring simultaneously at several farms in Western Massachusetts. You can get orchard tours and see apple butter being made, but the secret seems to be "tastings", i.e. free booze samples. more
Ellis Antiques ShowOct 31 - Nov 2Boston, MA
If anyone cares, everyone's favorite antiques show that doesn't involve driving out West to Brimfield. Park Plaza Hotel & Towers, Boston, MA.617-248-8571. more

Recurring Events
Coppal House Farm Corn Maze ( & Night Maze )Aug 1 - Oct 31Lee, NH
They have a night maze Columbus Day Weekend and soon, a haunted house attraction, too. The best is still Davis Farmland. 118 North River Road, Lee, NH.603-659-3572. more
Kimball Farm Corn MazeAug 23 - Oct 31Haverhill, MA
It's a corn maze. I've been. It's fun. Kimball Farm Corn Maze, 780 East Broadway, Haverhill, MA.978 521-3990. more
The Annual Psychic Fair and Witchcraft ExpoOct 1 - Oct 31Salem, MA
Weird but only for those without much sense in their heads. 10am-10pm daily at the Museum Place Mall in Salem. Museum Place Mall, 176 Essex Street, Salem, MA. more
Salem Halloween HappeningsOct 10 - Oct 30Salem, MA
Salem is on the commuter rail and there's no excuse to miss it this time of year. JUST GO. All the attractions are located near the visitors' center. Avoid anything that looks touristy. I recommend: the Pirate Museum, the Salem Witch Museum, The Peabody Essex Museum, and catch the theatre shows at the House of Seven Gables. Rt 128N to exit 25A, Rt 114E, follow signs to visitor's center. Park at Visitors Center and walk around, Salem, MA.978-740-1650. more more more more more
Salem Pumpkin Festival on the CommonsOct 18 - Nov 2Salem, MA
Beyond just "lots of pumpkins", they'll have a 1,000 lb monster pumpkin and a hay bale maze! I just saw it! And they have a moonbounces, too. 10am-5pm, Nov 1-2. JUST GO TO SALEM, ok? Salem Common, Salem, MA. more
Salem: Fiesta Shows CarnivalOct 20 - Oct 30Salem, MA
Salem is also having a carnival. I saw it, it looked fairly generic, one of those traveling shows where all the rides pack onto a truck. Oct 20-30, M-F 12-9pm, 12-10pm SS. 289 Derby Street, Salem, MA. more
Concord Festival of AuthorsOct 15 - Nov 2Concord, MA
This "festival" is really a series of author events and book readings, but many of them look quite interesting, especially dry southern humorist Roy Blount, Jr. on Oct 15 (the kind of guy who likes the cartoon Marmaduke), and a spooky night of thrillers and Dracula Oct 31. Various Places, Concord, MA. more
Pumpkin Carving @ Boston Nature CenterOct 28Mattapan, MA
As I mentioned last week, there's a pumpkin carving happening in Mattapan. 6-8pm. Register in advance. 500 Walk Hill Street, Mattapan, MA.617-983-8500. more

Performance
NBC's Last Comic Standing TourOct 30Lowell, MA
If anyone cares, an NBC show is doing a tour through Boston. Lowell Memorial Auditorium, Lowell, MA. more
Day of the Dead Celebration @ Berklee School of MusicNov 1Boston, MA
Although this seems to be a music performance rather than a festival, you can see them play the "donkey jawbone" musical instrument. Free. Café 939, Boston, MA. more

Boston Events Insider: Johnny's List of Quirky Boston Events: 10/24/08

Hi!

A few weekend updates!

Somerville Car Wash is doing a Haunted Car Wash! This is tonight ONLY, 6-9pm. They have 10 actors in costume to scare you, blacklights, a coffin, it sounds like they are really try to make this "real" not hokey. 680 Somerville Ave, Somerville.

I was just at Barrett's Haunted Mansion which I believe is the best in New England. Every night is a different charity. It's quite long, they have very creative actors and set design, all new from last year. This year they have added a new attraction (which costs $10) where you lie down in a coffin and they pretend to bury you alive. It's all in good fun... basically the coffin stays in place but there are pneumatic jacks underneath rocking it and they play scary sounds. 1235 Bedford St, Abington, MA. Definitely worth seeing. Every day through 10/31. Rating: A.

While you're on the South Shore, check out the Haunted Museum @ Marshfield Fairgrounds, which supports the Boys & Girls club. Just like Barrett's is perfect for teens and adults, Marshfield is perfect for small kids who need that not-so-scary experience. It's run with a low budget but a lot of passion. I wouldn't normally give it a "B" but they have a 2nd attraction, a hay ride which adds to the experience. Rating: B.

Finally, a lot of bars have Halloween parties this weekend and next weekend. I have not listed any of them because frankly they're not very creative. They hang up some decorations, put out a $500 prize, and hope that their customers will provide the atmosphere by coming in costume. I try to focus on the events that do something real. Anyway, they're out there, just check the Boston Phoenix or Weekly Dig.

-Johnny

Boston Events Insider: Johnny's List of Quirky Boston Events: 10/20/08

Welcome! This is your week in weird!

This is the last weekend before Halloween (sort of, it's on a Friday), so Halloween events are going first this week. I have placed a bunch into "Also Fun" that seem to be highly kids oriented.

The Week in Weird
Lecture by former US Vice President Al GoreOct 22Cambridge, MA
That lecture by Al Gore that I mentioned last week is still coming up, 10/22 at Harvard. It's free but they changed the rules, you DO need a Harvard affiliate to get you a ticket. Food & celebration starts at 3pm. Tercentenary Theatre, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. more
Thrill the World: Michael Jackson's Zombie Dance!Oct 25Salem, MA
The weird event of the week is: visit Salem State College and learn the dance from Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video! Sounds like so much fun and this weekend is the last Saturday before Halloween. You should be in Salem. Salem State College, Multipurpose Gym, O'Keefe Center, Canal Street, Salem, MA.978.542.7890. more
Haunted Salem Scavenger HuntOct 25Salem, MA
Also in Salem, this "tour group" company has one of their scavenger hunt events, which you can find regularly in Boston. Basically you and a team roam the city trying to find information (not steal stop signs). It sounds like fun! They have one for adults at 7pm and one for "families" at 4:30pm, i.e. kids get to do it while their parents stand around, bored. I hate when they say families like that, as though the *entire* family will be riveted by Sponge Bob Squarepants or whatever. Register in advance. more
Witch City Haunted OktoberfestOct 24 - Oct 26Salem, MA
This seems to be some kind of street festival, with live music and a comedy theatre show! Front Street, Salem, MA.978-745-4343. more
Tethered Balloon Rides in SalemOct 25Salem, MA
If you're smart enough to figure out where Washington Square is, take a quick trip up and down in a tethered Balloon. Also in Salem. Washington Square, Salem, MA. more
Halloween Monster Mash-UpOct 25Boston, MA
Also weird! It's another silent dance party where everyone should bring an mp3 player. Dress as a ghost! 2pm. See the website for the song and choreography. TBA on October 24, Boston, MA. more
Keene Pumpkin FestivalOct 25Keene, NH
It's a 2 hour drive from Boston, but they will feature more than 25,000 carved, lit pumpkins! It's quite a sight! Main Street, Keene, NH. more
MIT Pumpkin DropOct 25Cambridge, MA
I have no information on the MIT Pumpkin Drop, but last year it was the Saturday before Halloween. If so, it will be on the "Dot", a small circle of grass south of building 54. 11:59pm. MIT, Cambridge, MA. more
Jamaica Plain Lantern ParadeOct 26Jamaica Plain, MA
Here's an event that's semi-secret! People make lanterns from 3-liter soda bottles (attend a party to make one if you care to, or just show up at 6pm) and bring them to the pond in Jamaica Plain and walk around the pond at night, with music and hot cider. Rain date the next day. Free. Come at 6pm. Starts at the Boat House at Pond Street & Jamaica Way, Jamaica Plain, MA. more
Fall Foliage Festival @ Arnold ArboretumOct 26Boston, MA
And since you'll be in the area, stop by first for cider and storytelling at the Arnold Arboretum, with a guided tour to enjoy the Fall foliage. 12-4pm. Arnold Arboretum, Hunnewell Building Lawn, Boston, MA. more
Haunted HigginsOct 25Worcester, MA
The Higgins Armory is worth visiting anytime. But this Saturday, come in costume and go trick or treating (adults or kids), participate in a costume contest and hear spooky storytelling. OoooO! 100 Barber Ave, Worcester, MA. more
Things That Go Bump in the Night at Gore PlaceOct 24 - Oct 25Waltham, MA
This one seems even better, and closer! It's a spooky weekend with Victorian lantern shows, wagon rides, and an evening tour of the mansion with actors in costume and special effects. tours at 6, 7, 8pm. 52 Gore Street, Waltham, MA.781-894-2798. more
The Halloween Ball @ Belcourt Castle (RI)Oct 25Newport, RI
The masquerade ball is again at one of Newport's amazing mansions. Call immediately for tickets, will sell out! $95 but open bar, appetizers and a DJ and a band. 657 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, RI.401-846-0669. more
Gorefest at Improv BostonOct 23 - Oct 31Cambridge, MA
This improv comedy club does a spoof on slasher films that have a lot of blood. Sounds pretty gross. Might be funny if you're totally inured to horror flicks. 8pm but some days also 10pm. 40 Prospect St, Cambridge, MA.617-576-1253. more
Things That Go Bump in the Night @ Sturbridge VillageOct 25Sturbridge, MA
Spooky storytelling, magic, games, trick-or-treating, seems pretty kids-oriented. 5-9pm. 1 Old Sturbridge Village Road, Sturbridge, MA.(508) 347-3362. more
Great Pumpkin Nights @ Worcester EcotariumOct 25Worcester, MA
12pm-9pm. Hayrides, costume parades, train ride, games, displays. For kids. 222 Harrington Way, Worcester, MA.(508) 929-2700. more
Dorchester Open StudiosOct 25 - Oct 26Boston, MA
OK, now here are some non-Halloween events! It's Dorchester's version of the artists open house day. Walk around, view local art and speak with the creators, and buy something. Get A Map: Various Locations, Boston, MA. more
Orionids Meteor ShowerOct 20 - Oct 24Someplace Dark
I'm starting a new habit of listing all the major meteor showers of the year. To get a good view, go someplace without street lighting, like a large park or a pond. Look up and look for streaks of light in the sky. (Any suggestions for this near Boston?) The Orionids are best seen from 1am to twilight any morning between Oct 20 and Oct 24. Just Look Up, Someplace Dark. more more
Annual Southern New England Weather ConferenceOct 25Brookline, MA
7:30am-6pm. It's a lot of lectures, some interactive workshops, and singing, all to honor the weather. And they'll have kite flying! The Clay Center for Science and Technology, Dexter and Southfield Schools, Brookline, MA. more more
Orange Kite Halloween Kite FlyOct 26Dorchester MA
Also involving kite flying is this Halloween themed event. (Orange kites, get it?). PJPii Park, Dorchester MA. more
New Hampshire Renaissance Faire & Samhain CelebrationOct 25 - Oct 26Kingston, NH
King Richard's Faire is over, but here's another Ren Faire! This one's in Southern NH, not too far from Boston. It does look rather small in size. Sat-Sun 10am-5pm, with Samhain Celebration 5pm-7pm Saturday. Thorne Road, Kingston, NH.603.755.9587. more
ISD Renaissance FestivalOct 25Old Greenwich, CT
Also a Ren Faire, a larger one, but a 3 hour drive from Boston. The Aerial Angels that I wrote about earlier will also perform here. And there's plenty of mock combat, theatre, weaving, and comedy in the medeival style. 9:45am-6pm. 55 Florence Road, Old Greenwich, CT. more
All Night at the Farm @ Spencer-Peirce-Little FarmOct 24Newbury, MA
This one's not a Halloween event, but it sure would be spooky to stay overnight on the farm. They'll tell stories by fire and lead you through farm chores in the morning. 5 Little's Lane, Newbury, MA.978-462-2634. more
Concord Festival of AuthorsOct 15 - Nov 2Concord, MA
This "festival" is really a series of author events and book readings, but many of them look quite interesting, especially dry southern humorist Roy Blount, Jr. on Oct 15 (the kind of guy who likes the cartoon Marmaduke), and a spooky night of thrillers and Dracula Oct 31. Various Places, Concord, MA. more

Also Fun
Robert Frost Poetry FestivalOct 25Lawrence, MA
Also literary, this one is a poorly advertised poetry festival of some sort. It takes place at a school so it may be a kids-only kind of thing. South Lawrence East School, 165 Crawford St., Lawrence, MA.978-725-8828. more
Out on the Edge FestivalOct 18 - Nov 8Boston, MA
This 'festival' is mainly a series of performances, but they'll have several post-show audience discussions and events to socialize at. Theatre, a satire of TV news, a comedy about beauty pageants, a costume contest, and lots of gay frivolity, wink wink. Various Places, Boston, MA. more
Franklin County Fiber TwistOct 25Greenfield, MA
Do you like to knit? Hook rugs? What is rug hooking anyway, and does it involve hookers? Come see a wool spinning demonstration. There may be some kind of open studios, too. Greenfield High School, Greenfield, MA. more
Culture Clash World Music FestivalOct 26Haverhill, MA
It's officially a festival not a performance because they have indoor and outdoor stages. Come listen to world music and see bellydancers. JP McBride’s in Lafayette Square, Haverhill, MA. more
Halloween on the Harbor on Georges IslandOct 25 - Oct 26Boston, MA
They'll have a "spooky tour" of Fort Warren, which seems to not be a kids-only event. Fort Warren, Georges Island, Boston, MA. more
Tales Around the CampfireOct 24Belmont, MA
I'm trying to put the things that look just for kids lower down on my list. To be fair, adults can attend but the event may or may not be for you. Here are a bunch at local state parks. This one involves a campfire and ghost stories! They say the tales will not be kid-friendly (not too scary). 6:30-8:30pm. Habitat Education Center and Wildlife Sanctuary, 10 Juniper Road, Belmont, MA.617-489-5050. more
Haunted Forest @ Wellfleet Bay Wildlife SanctuaryOct 24South Wellfleet, MA
Also not so scary (for kids 6-12), is the haunted forest at this Cape Cod park. 5:45pm-8:15pm. 291 State Highway, Route 6, South Wellfleet, MA. more
Halloween Happenings @ Ipswich River Wildlife SanctuaryOct 24 - Oct 25Topsfield, MA
Probably the best will be this nighttime guided walk through the park. 6-9pm. Ipswich River, 87 Perkins Row, Topsfield, MA.978-887-9264. more
Carve a Pumpkin @ Moose Hill Wildlife SanctuaryOct 23Sharon, MA
It's a pumpkin carving and night walk. 6-8:30pm. 293 Moose Hill Street, Sharon, MA.781-784-5691. more
Halloween Prowl @ Moose Hill Wildlife SanctuaryOct 24 - Oct 26Sharon, MA
And, same place, another night walk, with a campfire and "druids" in costume. Fri 6:15-8pm, Sat 5:30-8pm, Sun 5:30-7:30pm. 293 Moose Hill Street, Sharon, MA.781-784-5691. more
Pumpkin Carving @ Boston Nature CenterOct 28Mattapan, MA
Also pumpkin carving, this time in a Boston neighborhood that's scary all year around. 6-8pm. Register in advance. 500 Walk Hill Street, Mattapan, MA.617-983-8500. more
Haunted Halloween Happenings at Heard HouseOct 24 - Oct 25Topsfield, MA
Park event number seven! Guests are encouraged to come in costume for a nighttime walking tour of the forest. Hear the history of Halloween. Rain or shine. Register in advance. Fri & Sat 6-9pm. The Barn", somewhere at the Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary, possibly 87 Perkins Row, Topsfield, MA. more
Franklin Park Zoo's "Zoo Howl" for kidsOct 25 - Oct 26Boston, MA
A not-so-scary Halloween celebration for children only, although that doesn't meet adults can't come and enjoy the holiday spirit and the cute kids. 11am-3pm. 1 Franklin Park Road, Boston, MA.617-541-5466. more
Falmouth Halloween ParadeOct 25Falmouth, MA
This business event encourages people to "stroll" through the merchant district and go trick-or-treating. And buy stuff. Main Street, Falmouth, MA. more
Essex ClamfestOct 25Essex, MA
It's outdoors, they'll have clams, and live entertainment, arts & crafts, and lots of community booths. 11am-4pm. Memorial Park, Essex, MA. more
Bye Bye Bugs WeekendOct 25 - Oct 26Framingham, MA
Although their website calendar is broken, I called this one in. Basically, it's a garden, and it's the last weekend to see the giant bug sculptures they have on the grounds. Garden in the Woods, 180 Hemenway Road, Framingham, MA.508-877-7630. more
RI International Horror Film Festival & H.P. Lovecraft TourOct 23 - Oct 26Providence, RI
Three days! Forty-seven films created to scar you emotionally for life! But also a walking tour honoring H. P. Lovecraft on Oct 25 and a booksigning. So not entirely films. Various Places, Providence, RI. more
Williamstown Film FestivalOct 17 - Oct 26Williamstown, MA
This one's far more 'real', although way out in Western Massachusetts. As well as the films there will be several artist discussions and socials. Various Places, Williamstown, MA.(413) 458-9900. more
Haunted Old New England (& Dog Show)Oct 24West Springfield, MA
Even though it's Halloween themed, I really cannot recommend traveling all the way to the Big E for an hour of storytelling. However, there's also a dog show that day so maybe you'll go to see that, too. 1305 Memorial Avenue, West Springfield, MA.413-205-5051. more

Performance
Provincetown Dance FestivalOct 24 - Oct 25Provincetown, MA
This "festival" is a series of dance performances. 7:30pm. The Provincetown Theater, 238 Bradford Street, Provincetown, MA. more

NovemberOct 17 - Nov 15Boston, MA
November is a political comedy by David Mamet about running for election and what politicans will do to win. Lyric Stage Company, 140 Clarendon Street, Boston, MA.617-585-5678. more

Recurring Events
Salem Halloween HappeningsOct 10 - Oct 30Salem, MA
Salem is on the commuter rail and there's no excuse to miss it this time of year. JUST GO. All the attractions are located near the visitors' center. Avoid anything that looks touristy. Wachusett Mountain ApplefestOct 18 - Oct 26Princeton, MA
Bigger but probably hokier is the Wachusett Mountain Applefest, which I've been to. The vendors tend to be "As Seen on TV" types rather than art festival types. But they do have a skyline ride (the ski lift) and great views and hiking opportunities. Rt 2W to Rt 140 S. Weekends. Other festivals, see site. While you're in the area, make sure to stop by nearby Davis Farmland. more
Davis Farmland & Megamaze (& Night Maze)Sep 2 - Nov 9Sterling, MA
Davis Farmland has the world's most complex corn maze, with 12 bridges giving it a 3D topology. For Halloween they decorate it not-so-scary and now they are also open at night. Daytime weekends, call for night hours. Bring a flashlight. They also have a petting zoo, but you need a child in tow to see it. I've been this year and recommend it highly. A must-see! 145 Redstone Hill, Sterling, MA.978-422-8888. more
Coppal House Farm Corn Maze ( & Night Maze )Aug 1 - Oct 31Lee, NH
They have a night maze Columbus Day Weekend and soon, a haunted house attraction, too. The best is still Davis Farmland. 118 North River Road, Lee, NH.603-659-3572. more

It's a corn maze. I've been. It's fun. Kimball Farm Corn Maze, 780 East Broadway, Haverhill, MA.978 521-3990. more

Beyond just "lots of pumpkins", they'll have a 1,000 lb monster pumpkin and a hay bale maze! I want to see that! 10am-5pm, Oct 18-19, 24-26, Nov 1-2. JUST GO TO SALEM, ok? Salem Common, Salem, MA. more
FirstWorksProvOct 2 - Nov 9Providence, RI
This series of performances and gallery exhibitions should in no way be considered a 'festival'. That being said, a number of the concerts look interesting. more more
Halloween Carnival @ J.K. Lilly Automobile MuseumOct 24Sandwich, MA
You could have attended this, but apparently the event is sold out. Since they have about 1000 acres, it's surprising to me that they *could* sell out! Call and beg. 5:30-8pm. Heritage Museums & Gardens, Sandwich, MA.508.888.3300. more

Boston Events Insider: Johnny's List of Quirky Boston Events: 10/14/08 Extra

Hi!

The Artists Ball is only $25 (they called me back) and they changed the rules on the Al Gore leecture... it's still free but now you have to get tickets from a Harvard affiliate (any friend with a Harvard student or employee degree, possibly alumni).

Boston Events Insider: Johnny's List of Quirky Boston Events: 10/14/08

The Week in Weird
Essex Shipbuilding Museum Steam MusterOct 18Essex, MA
The weird event of the week is your chance to see actual steam engines! Collectors will bring these devices either recreations or real models from the 1890s. 10am-4pm. 66 Main St, Essex, MA.978-282-8222. more
Hoot & Howl Night - BBQ @ Wolf HollowOct 18Ipswich, MA
While you're on the North Shore, I've been to this one, and it's highly recommended! They do a wolf presentation every weekend. You hear a lecture about wolves and get to howl along with them. This is their annual Halloween party and BBQ. Call ahead to reserve a space. Rain date one week later. 114 Essex Rd, Ipswich, MA.978 356-0216. more
Fitchburg Forge-In and Autumn FestivalOct 18Fitchburg, MA
Out west, you can see blacksmith compete to make the best metallic stuff. 10am-dusk. They'll have lots of arts vendors, and pumpkin carving after dark, too. Riverfront Park, Fitchburg, MA. more more
Big Bugs Spider WeekendOct 18 - Oct 19Framingham, MA
I've never been to the "Garden in the Woods", but they're having a festival about spiders and kids-level 'scary' Halloween stuff. I'm sure it's worth a peek if you're in the area. They have something similar the following weekend. Garden in the Woods, 180 Hemenway Road, Framingham, MA. more
Roman Legion Re-enactment @ Higgins ArmoryOct 18Worcester, MA
Also out west, the Higgins Armory is a museum in a castle-like building featuring medieval and renaissance armor and weaponry. They have a number of fun events all year and it's definitely worth the trip. On a single day they will have re-enactors from Ancient Rome, Vikings, and Renaissance swashbucklers. 100 Barber Ave, Worcester, MA.508-853-6015. more
Renaissance Dinner @ Higgins ArmoryOct 17Worcester, MA
And if you can afford $1000 they're having a true Renaissance dinner the night before. The ultimate costuming opportunity. 100 Barber Ave, Worcester, MA.508-853-6015. more
Head of the Charles RegattaOct 18 - Oct 19Boston, MA
I'm not much for sports, but it's easy to get behind the Head of the Charles, which as you know it's the largest 2-day rowing competition in the world. Just go to the Boston or Cambridge side of the Charles River and watch people who are not you sweat and grunt. Sat & Sun 8am-5pm. Charles River, Boston, MA. more
Fort Point Open StudiosOct 17 - Oct 19Boston, MA
Also local are two arts exhibitions. Walk around visiting the artist studios and private homes in Boston's 'best' arts district. Fri 4-7, Sat & Sun 11-6. more
Arlington Open StudiosOct 18 - Oct 19Arlington, MA
Not knowing or not caring about the conflict, the Arlington Open Studios will involve more homes and fewer studios. A little more walking which is just right if it's a nice day. 12-5. more
Fall Funfest @ Faneuil HallOct 18 - Oct 19Boston, MA
I called up Fanueil Hall and they're combining two festivals into a single weekend: the Street Performers Festival (all weekend with special shows Sat 6pm & Sun 5pm), and their A Capella Festival (Sat & Sun 11am-5pm). Fanueil Hall Marketplace, Boston, MA.617-523-1300 x7021. more
Quincy Dim Sum and PJPii Park Kite FlyOct 19Boston, MA
Also south of Boston is yet another kite-flying opportunity. Fall brings strong winds and it's a chance to meet some experts and see the decorative artistic kites they've made. And join them for dim sum. A big secret is that the cheap kites you can buy typically are fairly hard to fly. Getting some advice is quite helpful! Call Ralph Reed at KONE for details on this event. Pope John Paul II Park, Boston, MA. more
Shoes Tell Stories @ Fuller MuseumOct 19Brockton, MA
Do you like shoes? Have shoes ever changed your life? The Fuller Museum wants to hear your story. This event doesn't sound very impressive but I'm listing it because the Fuller Museum is such a gem. I've been three times and there's always something world-class going on in lonely Brockton. They are free and have arty socials Wednesday evenings, 5-9pm. 10am to 1pm. 455 Oak Street, Brockton, MA.508-588-6000. more
Concord Festival of AuthorsOct 15 - Nov 2Concord, MA
This "festival" is really a series of author events and book readings, but many of them look quite interesting, especially very dry southern humorist Roy Blount, Jr. on Oct 15, and a spooky night of thrillers and Dracula Oct 31. Various Places, Concord, MA. more
Readathon at JaecsOct 17Attleboro, MA
Also literary, a coffeehouse in Southern Massachusetts is doing a reading, start to end, of Catcher in the Rye. It's about teenage angst. Starting at 4pm. Although they don't list it on their website, I called to confirm this. You should probably call just to double-check. 68 Union Street, Attleboro, MA.508-223-JAES. more
Lecture by former US Vice President Al GoreOct 22Cambridge, MA
Former Vice President Al Gore is giving a speech next Wednesday 10/22 at Harvard. It's free and you don't need a ticket. Just show up very early to get a seat. 3-5pm. Tercentenary Theatre, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. more
Presidential Debate (3rd of 3)Oct 15Everywhere
Also free is taking an interest in politics. This is your last chance to catch some one-on-one political theatre. Give it a shot. If you don't own a TV, listen to 90.9FM or do streaming video from cnn.com. On TV, Everywhere. more
Orionids Meteor ShowerOct 20 - Oct 24Everywhere
I'm starting a new habit of listing all the major meteor showers of the year. To get a good view, go someplace without street lighting, like a large park or a pond. Look up and look for streaks of light in the sky. (Any suggestions for this near Boston?) The Orionids are best seen from 1am to twilight any morning between Oct 20 and Oct 24. Just Look Up, Everywhere. more more
ee cummings celebration at Forest Hills CemeteryOct 19Jamaica Plain, MA
Forest Hills Cemetery has such creative and interesting events. This week it's poetry to celebrate the birthday of poet ee cummings, who is buried there. Forest Hills Cemetery, 95 Forest Hills Ave, Jamaica Plain, MA.617-524-0128. more
Forest Hills Dog WalkOct 18Jamaica Plain, MA
Also at Forest Hills, spend $12 and bring your dog at 10am for a guided tour of monuments in the cemetery that your dog can put one leg up against. I went last year (without a dog!) as a favor for a friend who loves dogs. It was fun. Forest Hills Cemetery, 95 Forest Hills Ave, Jamaica Plain, MA. more
Salem Halloween HappeningsOct 10 - Oct 30Salem, MA
Salem is on the commuter rail and there's no excuse to miss it this time of year. JUST GO. All the attractions are located near the visitors' center. Avoid anything that looks touristy. I recommend: the Pirate Museum, the Salem Witch Museum, The Peabody Essex Museum, and catch the theatre shows at the House of Seven Gables. Rt 128N to exit 25A, Rt 114E, follow signs to visitor's center. Park at Visitors Center and walk around, Salem, MA.978-740-1650. more more more more more
Salem: Fiesta Shows CarnivalOct 20 - Oct 30Salem, MA
Salem is also having a carnival, Oct 20-30, M-F 12-9pm, 12-10pm SS. 289 Derby Street, Salem, MA. more
Salem Pumpkin Festival on the CommonsOct 18 - Nov 2Salem, MA
As if that wasn't enough, they're also having a pumpkin festival. Beyond just "lots of pumpkins", they'll have a 1,000 lb monster pumpkin and a hay bale maze! I want to see that! 10am-5pm, Oct 18-19, 24-26, Nov 1-2. JUST GO TO SALEM, ok? Salem Common, Salem, MA. more

Also Fun
Full Moon Stroll @ Canterbury Shaker VillageOct 14Canterbury, NH
Tonight! If you're anywhere near central New Hampshire, they're having a moonlight stroll at this museum village. 288 Shaker Rd, Canterbury, NH.(603) 783-9511. more
South End House ToursOct 18Boston, MA
10am. Here's a walking tour of Boston where rich people show off their houses because they want to educate you. Or impress you. A glimpse into the past, and also into high society. more
Sustaining Life: How Human Health Depends on BiodiversityOct 16Cambridge, MA
A free lecture by Drs. Edward O. Wilson and Eric Chivian. 7pm. Dr. Chivian was named one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential people in the world in 2007. 26 Oxford Street, Cambridge, MA.617.495.3045. more
Out on the Edge FestivalOct 18 - Nov 8Boston, MA
This 'festival' is mainly a series of performances, but they'll have several post-show audience discussions and events to socialize at. Theatre, a satire of TV news, a comedy about beauty pageants, a costume contest, and lots of gay frivolity, wink wink. Various Places, Boston, MA. more
Anime After DarkOct 18Somerville, MA
What's better than going to a haunted house or a party? Sitting in the dark for 12 hours contemplating anime as a serious art form. It's a notch geekier and two hours longer than last weekend's Lord of the Rings marathon. Film marathon 7pm to 7am. Somerville Theatre, 55 Davis Sq., Somerville, MA. more
Williamstown Film FestivalOct 17 - Oct 26Williamstown, MA
This one's far more 'real', although way out in Western Massachusetts. As well as the films there will be several artist discussions and socials. Various Places, Williamstown, MA.(413) 458-9900. more
Cogswell's Grant Pumpkin FestivalOct 18Essex, MA
Now for some harvest festivals! This one's small but nearby to your Salem day trip! They'll have hay rides, a pie-eating contest, pumpkin decorating, all kinds of kids stuff. Memorial Park, Essex, MA.978.283.1601. more
Rockport Harvest FestivalOct 18 - Oct 19Rockport, MA
Also nearby is a festival Rockport of little interest, but I'm sure it's completely authentic New Englandy goodness if you just want a relaxing small town experience. It's something more to do while you're visiting the North Shore. Downtown Rockport, Rockport, MA. more
Wachusett Mountain ApplefestOct 18 - Oct 26Princeton, MA
Bigger but probably hokier is the Wachusett Mountain Applefest, which I've been to. The vendors tend to be "As Seen on TV" types rather than art festival types. But they do have a skyline ride (the ski lift) and great views and hiking opportunities. Rt 2W to Rt 140 S. Weekends. Other festivals, see site. While you're in the area, make sure to stop by nearby Davis Farmland. more
CanstructionOct 20 - Nov 7Boston, MA
This one's probably worth at least stopping by. What does Food Bank, the charity, have a lot of? Canned food! What can you do with cans? Build lots of towers! Engineers & architects compete to build buildings and sculptures. The Boston Design Center, One Design Center Place, Boston, MA. more
Onset Stuffed Quahog ContestOct 19Onset, MA
Or, perhaps you'd prefer to eat the food. I believe a quahog is sort of a clam, pronounced "COH-hog" that nobody outside of New England cares about. Or maybe even inside New England. 508-291-6182. more
Greater Boston Antiques FestivalOct 18 - Oct 19Wilmington, MA
Things slowly go from adventurous to boring as you read further down my blog. Unless you find shopping antiques exciting, in which case check out this festival. Shriner's Auditorium, Wilmington, MA. more
Walk for Autism ResearchOct 19East Boston, MA
As well as yet another charity walk, they'll have a "community resource fair", and "much much more" but I guess they couldn't be bothered to list any of the items in the extensive list of "more". I wonder if the upcoming vote to ban dog racing is laying the groundwork for a casino at Suffolk Downs. Suffolk Downs, East Boston, MA. more
Won ~ Buddhist FairOct 19Somerville, MA
10am-6pm. It's an open house for this Buddhist temple, with meditation and food and event like face painting and wood carving. It's a tiny venue. 7 Hill Street, Somerville, MA.617.666.1121. more
Boston UFO ShowOct 17Watertown, MA
It deeply pains me to be advertising an event which promotes belief in UFOs. You really need to lack critical thinking skills to go for this. But it's certainly weird enough to mention. Hibernian Hall, 151 Watertown St., Watertown, MA. more

Halloween
Artists Ball at Eliot Hall @ Jamaica PlainOct 18Jamaica Plain, MA
This event is not very well described, but it appears to be a masquerade ball with circus performers and an art auction. Since it's a benefit, it may be expensive. Most balls are expensive (darn it!). Eliot Hall, Jamaica Plain, MA. more
The Halloween Ball @ Belcourt Castle (RI)Oct 18 - Oct 25Newport, RI
Also expensive (but worth it) is this masquerade ball at one of Newport's amazing mansions. If you miss it, they have another October 25. Call immediately for tickets, will sell out! $95 but open bar, appetizers and a DJ and a band. 657 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, RI.401-846-0669. more
Boston Pumpkin FestivalOct 18Boston, MA
OK, now on to Halloween events! Yay! This is the benefit that broke the Guiness World Record for most lit pumpkins on display. I went last year and -- holy pie filling!! -- they sure have a lot of pumpkins! It fills the entire Boston City Hall plaza and volunteers can carve and light as many as they want. They supply the pumpkins. It's really worth seeing, sure it's somewhat hokey, but: 21,000 pumpkins! Wow! City Hall Plaza, One City Hall Plaza, Boston, MA.207-655-3800. more
Annual Great Pumpkin FloatOct 18Dorchester, MA
You bring a small carved pumpkin, 6-8 inches, and they'll give you a float to send it down the river. It's free to join or to watch, but if you want to bring a pumpkin, register in advance. Rain date the next day. 5:30pm. Rain date next day, same time. I bet it's a beautiful event with lots of cute kids in costume. Gallivan Blvd. Entrance, Pope John Paul ll Park, Gallivan Blvd., Dorchester, MA. more
Halloween TalesOct 18Lincoln, MA
The Minuteman National Park has so many creative events and they are all excellent and original. This time it's ghost stories by candlelight. They have an early session for kids and then more scary stories for adults. Free. kids 4:30-5:45pm, adults 7-8:30pm. Hartwell Tavern - Rt. 2A, Lincoln, MA.978-318-7825. more
Pumpkin Fest @ Stony Brook Wildlife SanctuaryOct 17Norfolk, MA
Carve pumpkins, play games (presumably kids games), and go for a moonlight hike at this state park. 108 North Street, Norfolk, MA.508-528-3140. more
Halloween Hike at Boo Meadow BrookOct 17 - Oct 18Worcester, MA
This is more of a guided nature walk at night than a haunted forest event, but it looks genuinely substantive and fun. 6:30-8:30pm. 414 Massasoit Road, Worcester, MA.508-753-6087. more
Halloween Harvest Open House & Night Hike and HayrideOct 18Princeton, MA
Gee, I guess all these parks are hopping onto the Halloween hike bandwagon! This one features an actual wagon, a hay ride, in a addition to the hike. Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuary, 113 Goodnow Road, Princeton, MA.978-464-2712. more more
Ghosts of SomervilleOct 18Somerville, MA
This is a spooky Halloween play about Somerville history. It's outdoors, so dress warm, and walk along with the actors who are planted throughout the cemetery. Rain date the next day. 4pm. $5. Meet at Milk Row Cemetery, 400 Somerville Ave., next to Market Basket, Somerville, MA.617-625-6600, x2532. more
Great Pumpkin WeekendOct 18 - Oct 19North Andover, MA
This event seems very kids-oriented, but hopefully 6'4" adults who are having a birthday can get in too if they make a cute pouty face. Take a hay ride and go trick or treating, live music and pumpkin picking, and "musical entertainment", which is somebody's way of saying "music", I hope. By the way, they have possibly the worst website I've seen all month. 315 South Bradford Street, North Andover, MA. more

Recurring Events
King Richard's Faire (Ren Faire)Aug 30 - Oct 19Carver, MA
This is the last weekend for this Renaissance Faire! Weekends & holidays only. Plenty of Ren Faire vendors and people-watching, with 8 performance stages.
118 North River Road, Lee, NH.603-659-3572. more

The Haunted Ship aboard the USS Salem

Quincy, MA

Haunted house. Also less scary "Family Days". Inexpensive and convenient, great location, but the actors aren't trying that hard, and the décor is only OK.

Castle of the Damned at Hammond Castle

Gloucester, MA

7-11pm. Huge lines, arrive early! Drive to offsite parking lot, not the castle. Haunted House. Amazing acting and venue, but long lines and distance of actors from visitors make it hard to be startled/scared. A good not-so-scary venue but for adults, not children.

Boston Events Insider: Johnny's List of Quirky Boston Events: 10/03/08

Hi!

I hate to post more than once a week (and this event conflicts with my lecture), but it's so cool I have to send out the word.

They're doing a zombie walk in Salem, Sunday from 2pm (party) to 4pm (walk begins) to whenever (afterparty). Basically, you show up dressed like a zombie and get to pretend you're in a mob and it's the end of the world. The event is pretend and in real life you musn't touch anyone or be a jerk and walk off the sidewalk into the street.

They want to set a world record (the current one is 1028 zombies, Pittsburgh).

-Johnny
------------------------------------------------

Begins at Salem's Collins Cove (Off Webb St in Salem, MA) From 2:00 to 4:00, we will have zombie field day.. zombie kickball, frisbee, stumbling around, whatever. We will leave at 4 p.m., and route through the city, ending up at Dodge Street Bar & Grill around 6:00 or 7:00, with marinated veal brains and bands. Jimi Half Dead and the Die Alongs, The Darkers Hues, and more. Zombie movies playing at Salem Cinema all night also.
