Boston Events Insider: Johnny's List of Quirky Boston Events: 09/30/08

This week Halloween starts picking up, although for most venues it will be one more week to get them going. To spare those who don't care, I have placed Halloween in a separate category below. Get out there and enjoy New England!

The Week in Weird
Coppal House Farm Corn Maze - Night MazeOct 4 - Oct 11Lee, NH
The weird event of the week is the night maze in Lee, NH. See the bonfire, bring a flashlight and do their corn field maze at night! And get a peek of their Haunted House in construction. 118 North River Road, Lee, NH.603-659-3572. more
New Hampshire Fall FestivalOct 4Portsmouth, NH
Also in New Hampshire is one of the re-enactment villages in New England, Strawbery Banke. (Like the folks at Plimoth Plantation, they can't spell very well.) I've been and it's worth seeing, but only if you'll be doing something else in the area also. This week they're having a harvest festival. Tons of demonstrations of sheep dogs, oxen teams, and historic manufacturing techniques. Marcy Street, Portsmouth, NH.603-422-7514. more
Pioneer VillageOct 1 - Oct 8Salem, MA
Speaking of re-enactments, in addition to Strawbery Bank, Plimoth Plantation, and Old Sturbridge Village, there is now a 4th re-enactment museum in New England! It is Pioneer Village, in Salem. It's a one-mile walk from downtown Salem where all the attractions are, or a short trolley ride from the Old Town Hall. They portray the 1630s English colonists. They just re-opened, call to confirm their hours. Forest River Park, 98 West Avenue, Salem, MA.978-867-4767. more
Ig Nobel Prize Ceremony & LecturesOct 2 - Oct 4Cambridge, MA
Also weird! It's a night of comedy as phony "awards" are given to scientists doing bizarre and unintuitive research. Sanders Theatre, Cambridge, MA. more
Fireworks on the MysticOct 4Somerville, MA
The City of Somerville is trying hard to be creative and amazing and I think it's working. This is a new event, and I don't know much about it, but they'll have fireworks and that's awesome. 4pm, fireworks at 7:15pm. Kids games, entertainment, Red Bones food, and fireworks. Rain date the next day. Parking will be available at the former movie theater at 5 Middlesex Ave, Somerville MA. Mystic riverfront across from the Assembly Square Marketplace, Somerville, MA. more
Lowell Celebrates KerouacOct 2 - Oct 5Lowell, MA
Lowell is another city that tries extra hard (Quincy is another.) This event is based on Jack Kerouac, who is from Lowell MA. His books including "On The Road", encourage wanderlust. This festival looks surprisingly meaty considering it's inspired by book-lovers. They'll have tours of the area, a marathon book reading, music events, and commentary on Jack Kerouac. more
Taste Quincy! OktoberfestOct 4Quincy, MA
Speaking of Quincy, they're always having a festival to draw in tourism. This one features jugglers, magicians, pumpkin carving, and of course, face painting. 11am-4pm. McYintire Mall next to Quincy City Hall, Quincy, MA. more
Formal Opening of the Kennedy GreenwayOct 4Boston, MA
Remember the Big Dig? When they put the highway underground they opened up a lot of new land at street level. Instead of selling it for $1B and decreasing taxes, they made: yet another park. On October 4th they're having a celebration of some sort, it's unclear what exactly, but it will involve live music and dance lessons. No doubt the ubiquitous face painting will be available. more
Annual Roslindale Day ParadeOct 5Roslindale, MA
Personally I'd rather be taking in the gentrification in the Roslindale Parade. There doesn't appear to be anything in additional to the parade, despite the name "Roslindale Day". more
Roxbury Open StudiosOct 4 - Oct 5Roxbury, MA
And stop next door for another local arts exhibition. 11am-6pm. more
Green Buildings Open HouseOct 4Everywhere
This one involves private homes being opened to the public, too. Buildings all across New England are open for tours to show off renewable energy and energy conservation features. Various - see map, Everywhere. more
Go Fly a Kite! @ Plum Island AirportOct 4Newburyport, MA
Don't despair that summer is over! Autumn is awesome, with Fall foliage walks and plenty of wind for kites! Plus Halloween and Thanksgiving, yum! Here's another kites event. It's free. Bring a kite or make one with the guidance of the organizers. Plum Island, Newburyport, MA.978-462-2634. more
Topsfield FairOct 3 - Oct 13Topsfield, MA
While you're on the North Shore, check out the Topsfield Fair! There are a ton of agricultural fairs in New England, far too many for me to list, but this is one of the largest and best. They'll have pig racing, a petting farm, sand sculptures, milking and bee keeping and wood carving demonstrations, and lots of animal show and pie competition goodness. Arrive early to avoid parking trouble. MITAC discount. AAA discount. more
Berkshire Botanical Garden Harvest FestivalOct 4 - Oct 5Stockbridge, MA
With over 15,000 attending, they claim this is the longest-running and best-known community event in the Berkshires. They'll have demonstrations of blacksmithing and wool spinning, hay rides, a haunted house, a pumpkin toss, crafts vendors, live music, and of course, face painting. Rtes. 102 and 183, Stockbridge, MA.413/298-3926. more
Annual Goreyfest and AuctionOct 4Yarmouth Port, MA
Edward Gorey was the cartoonist who could have been Tim Burton, but wasn't. I recently visited his strange house museum on Cape Cod, and learned of their big annual fundraiser. Pulitzer Prize winner Alison Lurie will speak and they'll have an art auction. 4:30-7:30pm. 8 Strawberry Lane, Yarmouth Port, MA.(508) 362-3909. more
Fall Observatory Open HouseOct 4Milton, MA
The Blue Hills are the largest 'mountains' close to Boston, and they're having a weather-themed event. Plus it's great fun to go hiking there, although the trip out to Wachusett Mountain is more recommended. Summit of Great Blue Hill on the Blue Hills Reservation at the junction of Routes 93 and 138 about 10 miles south of Boston. Park at Trailside Museum at 1904 Canton Avenue, Milton, MA.617-696-0389. more
Light the NightOct 2Boston, MA
This appears to be yet another charity walk, but it takes place at nighttime and consists of lapping Boston Common, which is hardly a serious walk. And they claim they'll have "festivities" at 5pm and then the walk begins at 6:30pm. So it's sort of a festival. Rain or shine. Boston Common, Boston, MA. more
Vice-Presidential DebateOct 2Cambridge, MA
Which presidential candidate has the best vice? Come to Harvard, arrive *early* and find out. Or watch TV from anywhere. Kennedy School of Government, Cambridge, MA. more
Norman Bird Sanctuary Annual Harvest FairOct 4 - Oct 5Middletown, RI
Do you love birds? Come see what's happening at the "Monkey Bridge" and "Mud Pit". 583 Third Beach Road, Middletown, RI.401-846-2577. more

Also Fun
Block Island Birding WeekendOct 3 - Oct 5Block Island, RI
Also about birds, but expensive: the Audubon Society will lead field trips for both newbie and expert bird-watchers. It lasts all weekend and they want $450. Yikes! more
New England Warrior CampOct 3 - Oct 5Around Sudbury, MA
Also very expensive: if you love martial arts and have $250 to burn, spend all weekend with these enthusiasts. 781 864 6713. more
North Adams Fall Foliage ParadeOct 5North Adams, MA
Here's an excuse to head to Western Massachusetts to North Adams, where you can see the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (Mass MoCA). Starts at 1pm. Downtown, North Adams, MA. more
Douglas OctoberfestOct 4Douglas, MA
Wow. This looks really local and cheesy. Magicians & gymnasts. What, no face painting? 9am to 4pm. more
Harvest Fair @ The Growing CenterOct 4Somerville, MA
This one's a better bet, and it's closer. They'll have cider making, pumpkin decorating, music, and games, at this small but apparently powerful venue. Rain date the next day. Somerville Community Growing Center, 22 Vinal Avenue, Somerville, MA. more
FirstWorksProvOct 2 - Nov 9Providence, RI
This series of performances and gallery exhibitions should in no way be considered a 'festival'. That being said, a number of the concerts look interesting. more more
Illuminale BostonOct 1 - Oct 5Boston, MA
Also in the hyped-up category is this provactively named 'festival' which basically consists of putting outdoor lighting on some of Boston's buildings. There might be some kind of parade/walk Oct 1st at 6:30pm but it isn't clear from the website. Daily 6:30-11pm. I sort of don't get it. I guess it makes Boston more fun to walk around, but -- it's not really an 'event'. Custom Home, Boston, MA. more
Maynard Octoberfest / Maynard FESTOct 4Maynard, MA
The largest in the area. Magic pumpkin painting, fireworks, vendors. more
Boston Latino International Film FestivalOct 3 - Oct 12Cambridge, MA
I'm not much on sitting idle in the dark, but this film festival will have at least one panel, possibly more but it's unclear from the website. Various, Cambridge, MA. more
Boston Palestine Film FestivalOct 4 - Oct 12Boston, MA
This one looks more like it. They'll have an opening reception October 3rd and a few filmmakers appearing to present some of the showings. Various, Boston, MA. more
Juvenile Diabetes WalkOct 4Boston, MA
It's yet another charity walk, if that's your thing. Esplanade, Boston, MA. more
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer WalkOct 5Boston, MA
No doubt a worthy charity walk. Esplanade, Boston, MA. more
Samaritans 5K Run/Walk and Family FestOct 4Brighton, MA
Run along the Charles River and then a festival with music, games, kid's events. Benefits the Samaritans, suicide prevention. Artesani Park, 1234 Soldiers Field Rd Road, Brighton, MA.617-536-2460. more
New England Fringe Festival - Nashua, NHOct 1 - Oct 4Roxbury, MA
The festival continues October 1-4 in Nashua, NH. Roxbury Center for the Arts at Hibernian Hall, 182 Dudley Street, Roxbury, MA.978.667.0550. more
Ringling Bros. Circus (annual)Oct 2 - Oct 13Various
Everybody loves the circus! I bet it's great fun. Manchester NH, Oct 2-5. Springfield, MA Nov 6-9. Portland, ME, Oct 2-5. Providence RI, Apr 2009. MITAC discount. Stars a fellow named Bello who seems singularly unimpressive. But all over their promotional materials. So he must be popular. more
Baked FreshOct 5Boston, MA
Let's not mince words here. This is a merchant event. Still, the SoWa people have good art to sell, and there'll be live music. 10am-5pm. 540 Harrison Avenue, Boston, MA. more

Halloween
The Annual Psychic Fair and Witchcraft ExpoOct 1 - Oct 31Salem, MA
Also not mincing words, why would I want to attend an "expo" that is basically vendors trying to trick me into believing that rocks can heal me and palms tell my future? Well, it's weird, so I'm listing it. 10am-10pm daily at the Museum Place Mall in Salem. Museum Place Mall, 176 Essex Street, Salem, MA. more
Salem Haunted Happenings Grand ParadeOct 2Salem, MA
I bet this is the cutest thing ever! It's a kids parade, all in costume. 6:30pm. Shetland Park to Salem Common, Salem, MA.978.744.0004. more
Spirits Among the Ruins (A Paranomal Investigation)Oct 4 - Oct 31Salem, NH
I've been to this place and if there's one thing the experts agree on, if it's not a hoax exactly, it can't be as interesting as the New Age Mysticism implies. Still, it's a fun activity if you're in the area, and it certainly is weird. They have an alpaca farm, and it's open year-round, too. A bunch of insane paranormal types will pull the gullible along. Might be a fun show. Oct 4, 17, & 31. 105 Haverhill Road, Salem, NH.603-893-8300. more

Recurring Events
Davis Farmland & MegamazeSep 2 - Nov 9Sterling, MA
You really must check out Davis Farmland, with their petting zoo (kids only, boo hoo!). And they have the best maze in New England, made out of a corn field! For Halloween they decorate it not-so-scary. 145 Redstone Hill, Sterling, MA.978-422-8888. more
Kimball Farm Corn MazeAug 23 - Oct 31Haverhill, MA
Trying to compete with Davis Farmland and the Davis MegaMaze, the Kimball Farm is hosting its own corn maze. Kimball Farm Corn Maze, 780 East Broadway, Haverhill, MA.978 521-3990. more
King Richard's Faire (Ren Faire)Aug 30 - Oct 19Carver, MA
Rt 3S to 44W to 58S. Saturdays & Sundays only. I've just been and here's my report. It's fun to stroll around people-watching and seeing all the shops, which are Ren Faire themed and not hokey carnival themed. There are a few olde timey amusement park rides but primarily the entertainment is the 8 stages. I'm told they don't pay much, and about 2/3 of the acts are not really worth watching. They embarass volunteers on stage and have a lot of overhead trying to draw in the crowd. However, we were very impressed with the Aerial Angels and Paolo Garbanzo. I would avoid the Ded Bob Sho and the Flying Freak Show. The main event is always the jousting, a must-see!! Rt 3 S to Rt 44 W to Rt 58 S. Weekends and Holidays only. (508) 866-5391. more
WaterfireMay 24 - Nov 11Providence, RI
They put baskets of wood in the river and light them, making a nice night-time river walk. Providence Place, Providence, RI.401 751-1221. more
Coppal House Farm Corn MazeAug 1 - Oct 31Lee, NH
I visited Kimball Farm's corn maze and now I want to see this one, too! The best is still Davis Farmland. 118 North River Road, Lee, NH.603-659-3572. more

Performance
Cirque du SoleilSep 5 - Oct 12Boston, MA
These are the people who clown around but also do acrobatics in the air on long silk strands. Bayside Expo Center, Boston, MA.800-678-5440. more
Janet Jackson and LL Cool JOct 1Boston, MA
I feel a wardrobe malfunction coming on. TD Banknorth Garden, Boston, MA. more
The T PlaysSep 17 - Oct 4Boston, MA
How would you like to see a play that was written in less than 20 minutes, on a bustling subway? Yeeeeeea, that'd be awesome, riiiiight. The Factory Theatre, 791 Tremont Street, Boston, MA.617-240-6317. more

Overnight Travel
Maine Pumpkin FestivalOct 4Cumberland, ME
This pumpkin event seems surprisingly creative and interesting. They'll have music and science shows all day, and then light the pumpkins after dark. Cumberland Fairgrounds, Cumberland, ME. more
Maryland Renaissance Festival @ Silver SpringsAug 23 - Oct 19Crownsville, MD
I'm told it's the best Renaissance Faire on the east coast and worth a trip. Crownsville Road, Crownsville, MD. more

Boston Events Insider: Johnny's List of Quirky Boston Events: 09/23/08

Hey-o,

Summer is over, but Halloween is here! The first haunted houses and ghost tours open for the season this week. See below for a complete list. Also, I've separated Halloween into its own post. There is a limit to how big a LiveJournal post can be, apparently.

The Week in Weird
J. Cannibal's Feast of FleshSep 27Brookline, MA
This week's blog is in chronological order, backwards! Let's start with the apocalyptic future. It's the weird event of the week, a zombie festival! Recurring Events
(508) 866-5391. more
Eastern States ExpositionSep 12 - Sep 28West Springfield, MA
It's the 9th largest agricultural fair in the United States, and it shows. Over 1.1M people attend and every kind of hokey "as seen on TV" product is available at the many vendors booths. The last time I went I got shut in a glass booth with a huge fan that swooshed play money all around and I tried to grab as much as I could. I won a cap and the little girl in front of me grabbed more bills and won a car or something. *pout*. They'll have an acceptable (but traveling, not fixed) carnival, some really nice equestrian events, name brand music performers, and a great circus! They'll also have a slightly alarming "New England in Miniature" called Storrowton which is the only part of New England that many tourists will ever see. Rt 90W to exit 4. Rt 5S. 1305 Memorial Avenue, West Springfield, MA. more

Boston Events Insider: Johnny's List of Quirky Boston Events: 09/18/08

Hi!

Here's hoping you get in some outdoor time this weekend. This is the last weekend of summer normality before Halloween and Fall Foliage events start kicking in.

The Week in Weird
Salem Pirate FaireSep 20 - Sep 21Salem, MA
The weird event of the week is the Salem Pirate Faire! I've been to this and it's sort of a Pirate-themed Renaissance Faire, about 5% the size of King Richard's Faire but highly reecommended. They have a dozen live actors portraying pirates and doing a play (in segments) that lasts all day. There will be vendors of appropriately themed goods, with food and music. Winter Island Park, 50 Winter Island Road, Salem, MA. more
Talk Like A Pirate Day @ Heritage Museums & GardensSep 19Sandwich, MA
However, I did find an event in New England! There's a celebration from 5:30-7pm at the Pirate Museum and then an outdoor movie at 7:30, "Hook", with Robin Williams. Heritage Museums & Gardens, Sandwich, MA. more
Mass Ferret Friends' "King Ranger's FaireSep 20Sharon, MA
Also on the Ren Faire theme is this year's ferret festival. I'm sure the ferrets are very cute. 11am-4pm. Outdoors. Ferret games and contests. Borderland State Park, Sharon, MA.(781) 224-1098. more
Fall Family Festival @ Green Animals Topiary GardenSep 20Portsmouth, RI
Speaking of animals (you can see how easy it is to be a journalist with a weak segue like that), this is the big event of the year at this topiary, with plenty of animal-shaped shrubs. They'll have live music, scarecrow building, sort of kid stuff but it's a nice garden, I've visited, and a great excuse to stop by nearby Newport and see the mansions and cliff walk. 380 Corey's Lane, Portsmouth, RI.401-847-1000. more
Revels RiverSing (Fall Celebration)Sep 21Cambridge, MA
Every year this local chorus has a participatory sing-a-long along the Charles River near JFK Street. Half of you are on the Boston side and the other half on the Cambridge side. I've been and it was pretty fantastic. Picnic at Winthrop Park in Harvard Square at 5pm and then at 5:45 a procession to the river. Then sing 6-7:30pm. Participatory. Bring a flashlight and a blanket. Over 2,000 attend. No sign-up needed. Weeks footbridge, Charles River, Cambridge, MA. more
Dancing on the CharlesJul 26 - Sep 20Cambridge, MA
Also on the Charles River, this is the last week of the year for this outdoor dance in Cambridge. Sounds great. Buy tix in advance. American Legion, 4 Gerry's Landing, Cambridge, MA. more
The Gathering of People Pow-WowSep 20 - Sep 21Jamaica Plain, MA
Although there are pow-wows (native american festivals) all over New England, this is the only one that's actually in Metro Boston. Rain or shine. Opening Ceremony Sat @ 12pm, then Sun 12-5pm. Outdoors. Bring a blanket or chair. They'll have singing, dancing, drumming, ethnic food and vendors. The Native American Indian Center of Boston, 105 South Huntington Avenue, Jamaica Plain, MA.617-232-0343 x26. more
Third Annual Intertribal Powwow @ Sweetwilliam FarmSep 20 - Sep 21Upton, MA
I also list the major pow-wows somewhat close to Boston and here is yet another. If anything it looks like it may be bigger than the Jamaica Plain one. They'll have drumming, singing, dancing, including a "pumpkin dance" and a "blanket dance", storytelling. And of course it takes place on a farm, with animals, hay rides, and ice cream. Sweetwilliam Farm, 153 North St, Upton, MA.508-529-2000. more
The New Hampshire Highland GamesSep 19 - Sep 21Lincoln, NH
Also ethnic! I haven't been to this one but the Highland Games I did visit last year makes me a real believer! These people know how to party! It's at a major ski resort so they'll probably have gondola rides and hiking trails. They'll have a fiddle championship, band marching, athletics & dance competitions, tons of music and vendors, and "sheepdog trials". I wonder what happens to the sheepdogs they find guilty?. Loon Mountain Ski Resort, Lincoln, NH. more
BioBlitz at the Seacoast Science CenterSep 20Rye, NH
Have you ever wanted to know how to identify animals and seem super smart to people? While you're in New Hampshire, join this "marathon" where volunteers and naturalists roam around finding and counting animals, presumably for some kind of biodiversity research. 570 Ocean Blvd., Rye, NH.(603) 436-8043. more
MP3-EXP (iPod Dance Party)Sep 20Boston, MA
These iPod dance parties are becoming quite popular. I went to the one last week and it was so much fun! Basically you wear an iPod for music (instead of listening to loudspeakers) and dance around in a place that (to passersby) looks totally quiet. This one's outdoors. Aquarium stop on the blue line. Download their MP3 before coming. Christopher Columbus Park, Boston, MA. more
Boston Comedy FestivalSep 14 - Sep 20Boston, MA
The Boston Comedy Festival isn't exactly weird but it was SO much fun the year I went. Highly recommended! The Smothers Brothers will be present and presumably they'll perform. The really big deal is finals night, the last night of the week. Various downtown venues, Boston, MA. more
New Story Retreat for StorytellersSep 18 - Sep 21Albany, NH
Do you like to write? Are you too scared to actually do some writing? This workshop / retreat may be for you. It's oriented towards storytellers. World Fellowship Center, Albany, NH. more
Boston Zine FairSep 20 - Sep 21Boston, MA
Before there were blogs and Web sites and email newsletters, there were "zines". Amateur magazines, published by wannabes and occasionally the source of greatness who gets discovered and makes the big time. (Or not.) They're having a celebration, although it's not clear what the event actually comprises. But they'll have "zines" for you to read through. 10am-6pm. Art Institute of Boston, 601 Newbury Street, Boston, MA. more
Endless Summer Waterfront Festival @ NantasketSep 20Hull, MA
Summer's not actually endless, so take advantage of these outdoor festivals while they last! Rain date the next day. They claim it's the biggest beach party in Massachusetts, which couldn't possibly be true. But they'll have a participatory sandcastle competition and a street chalk art event (Sign up). And they'll have hot dog, pizza eating, and "brain freeze" smoothie eating competitions. Sounds great!. Nantasket Beach, Nantasket Avenue, Hull, MA. more
Danehy Park Family DaySep 20Cambridge, MA
Kids really don't appreciate how favored they are when it comes to events like this. They'll have arts & crafts, amusement park rides, but sort of kids-only. And kite and music and a lovely day out in the park that anyone can enjoy. 11am-4pm. Danehy Park, Cambridge, MA.617-349-4301 or 617-349-6229.. more
Harvard Museums Community DaySep 20Cambridge, MA
Perhaps you'd prefer your arts indoors. Silly of you. Well, they're having free admission to the Harvard collection of museums. 10am-5pm. Sackler Museum, 485 Broadway, Cambridge, MA. more
Sin-O-Matic Variant BallSep 20Boston, MA
Boston's largest fetish nightclub is having their annual party, called the "Variant Ball". I really have no idea what that means, and apparently they don't feel that describing the event on their website would help people decide. It's a nightclub. It's a dance party. They have a bar. People will dress in black and leather. It should be good if that's your thing. 1254 Boylston St., Boston, MA. more
South End Open Studios (Boston Open Studios, United South End Artists Open Studios)Sep 20 - Sep 21Boston, MA
South Boston is said to be the "best" artist community in Boston so this event is very worthwhile. You walk around visiting local artists homes and studios. It's far more personal than simply meeting vendors, and it's nice to walk around getting to know a neighborhood! It's free but of course they hope you'll buy some artwork. 11am-6pm. Info booth at 540/560 Harrison Ave. Start from 560 Harrison Avenue, Boston, MA.617-267-8862. more
Pawtucket RI Open StudiosSep 19 - Sep 21Pawtucket, RI
I guess the folks in Pawtucket thought they'd be far enough away not to conflict. Here's another local art show and outdoor walk opportunity. Free shuttles take you around. Start from 175 Main Street, Pawtucket, RI. more
Craft Workshops @ Sturbridge VillageSep 20Sturbridge, MA
I'm going to tell you a secret about Sturbridge Village. JUST GO. It doesn't matter that they're having a crafts workshop, where you get to learn some 19th century woodworking or blacksmithing (or don't pay and try to just watch from the edge). The village itself is a marvel, with tons of live actors representing 19th century New Englandy goodness. Just go, for Pete's sake. 1 Old Sturbridge Village Road, Sturbridge, MA.(508) 347-3362. more
stART on the StreetSep 21Worcester, MA
They say it's the largest arts festival in central Massachusetts. And they could be right. If you're in the area (for example visiting Davis Farmland or the Ecotarium), it looks like fun, with 11am-5pm. Featuring over 240 artists & crafters, 10 live bands, street performers, kids activities and a food court. Park Ave. and Elm St., Worcester, MA. more

Also Fun
Arlington Town Night / Town DaySep 19 - Sep 20Arlington, MA
Personally, I would prefer a festival in upscale Arlington, MA. They'll have entertainment and fireworks on Friday, starting at 5:30pm, and then the usual street fair stuff on Saturday, 10-3pm. Rain date the following weekend. Spy Pond Field, Arlington, MA. more
Old Deerfield Fall Craft FairSep 20 - Sep 21Deerfield, MA
One step down, this one's pretty concretely commercial, and they fail to mention music or street performers. However they'll have demonstrations of rug hooking, glassblowing, and "lampwork" and free museum admission. Free shuttles take you around. more
Meet Me Downtown, Annual Festival of the Arts in LynnSep 20Lynn, MA
11am-4pm. Another step down, it seems like this festival will be smaller (they claim 3,000 people). They'll have the usual vendors and music, a talent show and unspecified "performances". Central Square, Lynn, MA. more
Sandwich Glass Museum Glass Show & SaleSep 20 - Sep 21Sandwich, MA
If you like glassblowing though, this is the place to be. (Perhaps on your way back from the Pirate event at Heritage Museums & Gardens.) I stopped here a few weeks ago and was given a spontaneous demonstration with no pressure to buy anything. This event will likely be worth a visit. Sandwich Glass Museum, Sandwich, MA.508-888-0251. more
Bourne Scallop FestivalSep 19 - Sep 21Bourne, MA
Also on Cape Cod: a festival based on a single food. I've seen so many ads for this that it's hard to believe the festival is based on scallops. I guess there's a powerful scallop lobby. They claim that 40,000 people will attend, with the usual art and craft vendors, carnival rides and live music, and they don't actually mention scallops amongst their food choices, which is odd. Main Street, Bourne, MA. more
North Quabbin Garlic & Arts FestivalSep 20 - Sep 21Orange, MA
Here's another way to do it right. It's not just a garlic festival, it's an arts festival! They'll have a bunch of cooking and artist demonstrations, workshops, and (for those who are gullible) 'healing arts'. My favorite events on their schedule: clogging, yo yo-ing, Indian Bhangra dancing, a garlic sack race, and a garlic and egg toss. Vampires welcome!. more
Polish Harvest FestivalSep 20 - Sep 21South Boston, MA
12-6pm. It's one of only two Polish festivals I know of in New England. But the other one has a drunk tank. 655 Dorchester Avenue, South Boston, MA.617-268-4355. more
Where Were You in 1968?" BBQ & DanceSep 20Rehoboth, MA
I grew up in Rehoboth, MA and this week they're having perhaps the biggest celebration of the year, based around the anniversary of their 1968 anniversary celebration. I guess it was a really good celebration. It's New Englandy goodness, check it out. 4 Locust Ave, Rehoboth, MA.508-252-3031. more
Connecticut Day at Southwick's ZooSep 20Mendon, MA
This time it's the turn of people with Connecticut IDs to have free admission to the largest zoo in New England. 2 Southwick Street, Mendon, MA.800-258-9182. more
Phantom Gourmet Food FestivalSep 20Boston, MA
11am-4pm, next to Fenway Park. You pay $40 and sample food from 80 restaurants. I don't normally even read "tastings" ads but the Phantom Gourmet is a good judge. Must buy tix in advance! Seriously, I showed up one year and was told they were out of tickets. Landsdowne St., Boston, MA. more
WCPA Poetry Contest Winners’ ReadingSep 20Worcester, MA
I'm not sure how much poetry I can sit through without screaming. But if you like this stuff, here's the best of the best, from Worcester. 2pm. Worcester Public Library, Salem Street, Worcester, MA. more
Afternoon Canoe on the Concord RiverSep 21Natick, MA
You can go canoeing on the Charles River anytime when it's warm (see http://www.ski-paddle.com), but here's an opportunity for a guided tour where you can learn some history, too. Register in advance. Broadmoor, 280 Eliot Street, Natick, MA.508-655-2296. more
Lantern FinancialSep 24Boston, MA
A local financial group is having a free "risqué workshop" with themes like "Having a Quickie" and "Experimenting with Something New", for newlyweds who could use some tips on planning. They swear it's a charity event, for Business and Baseball, with free food and giveaways, and not overly commercial. Lantern Financial, LLC, 50 Franklin Street, 3rd Floor, Boston, MA.617-482-2700. more
Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund WalkSep 21Boston, MA
It's yet another charity walk. This time for Cancer, a good cause. Maybe they should merge them all together into one humongous walk on just one day of the year. It runs along the Boston Marathon route. Register ahead of time. Jerry Lewis will NOT be there, thank God. Various, Boston, MA.800-632-3562. more
Hub on WheelsSep 21Boston, MA
I can't believe they're going to shut down Storrow Drive so that bicyclers (who have plenty of bike paths, frankly) can dominate the city. Amazing. Goes to a student charity. Various, Boston, MA. more

Grotonfest - Air Show with Fireworks & ConcertSep 20Groton, MA

British Invasion WeekendSep 18 - Sep 21Stowe, VT
I'm even less likely to drive to Vermont for a car show, considering I live right next to the Larz Anderson Auto Museum in Brookline, MA which is constantly having lawn shows all summer. But hey. It's probably the biggest thing happening in Vermont. I'll list it. more

Boston Events Insider: Johnny's List of Quirky Boston Events: 09/09/08

Hi! Yet another, and hopefully the last format for the blog. Summer is coming to an end, don't sit around at home or do something indoorsy. Get outside while you can do it in shorts and a t-shirt!

The Week in Weird
Miracles in Motion Medieval FaireSep 13Swanzey, NH
Here's the event of the week: this medeival faire benefits charity somehow and seems to be primarily composed of a jousting tournament. It's the biggest local event of the New England Jousting Association, which I phoned. This isn't just a demonstration as the jousting at King Richard's Faire. It's an actual competitive joust, with 8 different competitors from 3 different countries. Sounds fantastic!. Cheshire Fairgrounds, 247 Monadnock Highway (Rt 12), Swanzey, NH.603-357-7282. more
Audubon Society - Raptor WeekendSep 13 - Sep 14Bristol, RI
Not involving any velociraptors, this event features live avian hunters such as eagles and owls. You'll see demonstrations of falconry, and -- no kidding -- "Owl Pellet Dissection". What Mr. Owl's been eating lately?. Audubon Environmental Education Center, 1401 Hope Street (Route 114), Bristol, RI.401-245-7500. more
Cape Cod Scottish FestivalSep 13Sandwich, MA
I'm not even Scottish but I have to say Two Thumbs Up for the Cape Cod Scottish Festival! First of all, I've recently visited the venue, the Heritage Museum & Gardens, which has extensive gardens, a car museum, an arts museum, a pirate museum (aRR!!!) and a carousel. That's highly recommended just by itself! But then add in music, dancing, the "bonniest knees" competition, athletic games, falconry and sheep herding demonstrations, storytelling, and a big bagpipe parade. Heritage Museum & Gardens, Sandwich, MA. more
Harwich Cranberry FestivalSep 12 - Sep 14Harwich, MA
Also on Cape Cod, and another nice surprise is this cranberry festival. It's hard to base an entire festival on cranberries, but they seem to be up for it, including a parade, fireworks, a carnival and a craft show. more
Irish Connections FestivalSep 12 - Sep 14Canton, MA
I was wrong when I called something else the largest Irish festival in New England. This one is, and I've seen it. They'll have three stages of music and dance, and a few booths. I didn't find Irish Connections particularly innovative or different, unlike the Scottish Festivals I've heard of. Off Rt. 138. Largest on the East Coast. 200 New Boston Drive, Canton, MA.781-821-8291. more
Revolutionary War Living History WeekendSep 13 - Sep 14Newport, RI
You don't need an excuse to visit Newport with its mansions, gardens, beach, and cliff walk, but if you did -- this is it! All weekend long, the nation's "largest coastal fortification" will have re-enactors from the American Revolutionary War, with lectures, artillery demonstrations, and mock battles. Fort Adams State Park, Newport, RI.401-841-0707. more
Eastern States ExpositionSep 12 - Sep 28West Springfield, MA
It's the 9th largest agricultural fair in the United States, and it shows. Over 1.1M people attend and every kind of hokey "as seen on TV" product is available at the many vendors booths. The last time I went I got shut in a glass booth with a huge fan that swooshed play money all around and I tried to grab as much as I could. I won a cap and the little girl in front of me grabbed more bills and won a car or something. pout. Rt 5S. 1305 Memorial Avenue, West Springfield, MA. more
Out at Plimoth PlantationSep 13Plymouth, MA
If you think you'd feel alienated at the Big E amongst the aggie population and tourist gawkers, think how you'd feel as a gay or lesbian person amongst the 1620 Pilgrims! Remarkably, now you get to find out. As you know, Plimoth Plantation is a recreation village with actor-historians portraying pilgrims and native americans. Today they'll have discounted admission, lectures on LGBTA topics, and a traditional-style Thanksgiving dinner. They're having a minor arts festival in Plymouth as well and a bird-watching tour (same website link). 137 Warren Avenue, Plymouth, MA.(508) 746-1622. more
Billerica's Yankee Doodle Homecoming FestivalSep 12 - Sep 14Billerica, MA
This festival goes way past small-towny! They'll have a parade, magic and storytelling, and colonial re-enactors who'll demonstrate a "tar and feathering". Now that's weird! Also dance-a-thon, fireworks,. Billerica Common, 365 Boston Rd, Billerica, MA. more
Acton DaySep 13Acton, MA
For a tiny town, Acton has plenty of creative events. On Sep 13, they'll have a festival that includes a bungee run, moon bounces, Dance Dance Revolution, and a dunk tank. Then, a Rolling Stones tribute band!. NARA Park, Acton, MA.978-264-9608. more
Boston Tattoo ConventionSep 12 - Sep 14Boston, MA
It's weird all right: The Boston Tattoo Convention. If you're into tattoos, don't miss this opportunity to gawk and be gawked at. Just don't get a tattoo you won't still be proud of when you're 80! They'll have a burlesque show and tattoo contests. Boston Center for the Arts, 539 Tremont St, Boston, MA. more
Tub ParadeSep 13Lenox, MA
Not involving bathtubs, this is a parade of horse-drawn carriages and is followed by an ice cream social. Ventfort Hall, Lenox, MA. more
Chelsea Kite FestivalSep 13Chelsea, MA
I'm sure the Chelsea Kite Festival will be worth seeing, with kites of all different shapes and colors. No details are given about kite competitions or vendors, so I'm guessing basically it's people flying kites in a park with no real scheduled 'event'. Mary O'Malley Park on the Mystic River, Admiral's Hill, Chelsea, MA. more
Old Sturbridge Village GalaSep 13Sturbridge, MA
If you can afford $150 for a benefit, this is the formal ball event of the month! Pretend to be rich for a night. 1 Old Sturbridge Village Road, Sturbridge, MA.(508) 347-3362. more
College Night at The Museum of Science, BostonSep 15Boston, MA
Are you a student? The Museum of Science, Boston is offering free admission to the exhibits and all their theatres, for college students who can prove it. 4-10pm. more
Boston Folk FestivalSep 13 - Sep 14Boston, MA
The Boston Folk Festival, held on the campus of UMass Boston, always seems to be a Very Big Deal. They only have two stages, though, and Saturday's event is evening-only, a songwriting competition finalist performance. UMass Boston, Boston, MA.(617) 287-6911. more
Boston Comedy FestivalSep 14 - Sep 20Boston, MA
I've been to the Boston Comedy Festival and it's really worth seeing! The various standup comedy nights around town are hit-or-miss, but this is just hit-hit-hit-hit. The Smothers Brothers will be present and presumably they'll perform. The really big deal is finals night, the last night of the week. Various downtown venues, Boston, MA. more
Pet Rock FestivalSep 14Worcester, MA
It's a benefit for animals, with a bunch of pet competitions, live music, the ubiquitous kids "face painting and unspecified and probably lame crafts", and a vegetarian food court. The real drawn here is that you can see dogs playing frisbee and baseball!. Quinsigamond Community College, Worcester, MA.508-832-8918. more
Barktoberfest - Pound Hounds Family Fun Day & Dog WalkSep 14Westford, MA
Clearly not reading the pet events calendar is the conflicting event Barktoberfest. It also comes with frisbee dogs and pet trick competitions! Rain or shine. 11am-3pm. Free. 4-H Fairgrounds, 51 S. Chelmsford Rd., Westford, MA.508-435-5029. more
Fall Harvest Scarecrow!Sep 14Concord, MA
It works like this. You visit the museum, and outdoors on the lawn you get to make (and take home!) your own scarecrow. It sounds like just the sort of thing they'd limit to kids only. I hope not! Music, popcorn, and apple cider are provided, but bring your own old clothes to stuff with hay. 200 Lexington Road, Concord, MA.(978) 369-9763. more
Harvard Fall FestivalSep 13 - Sep 14Harvard, MA
Yet another small town event, with a BBQ cookoff, a carnival that only kids can ride (pout), and a craft fair. However, they'll have fireworks!. Hazel's Farm, 150 Ayer Road, Harvard, MA. more
Brookline Arts FestivalSep 14Brookline, MA
Even though it's absent from the Larz Anderson website, I believe this is actually happening. It's yet another olde towne outdoor festival. They may have fireworks though!. Lanz Anderson Auto Museum, 15 Newton Street, Brookline, MA. more

Also Fun
Charlestown Art in the Park FestivalSep 13Charlestown, MA
Although outdoors, it seems this is simply art vendors, a small draw kind of festival. more
Music Festival @ Sweetwilliam FarmSep 13Upton, MA
1-6:30pm. It's an outdoor concert series at a farm, where presumably they'll have animals and fresh veggies. 153 North St., Upton, MA.508-529-2000. more
Rhode Island Day at Southwick's ZooSep 13Mendon, MA
Free admission at the largest zoo in New England continues, this time for those with a Rhode Island ID. 2 Southwick Street, Mendon, MA.800-258-9182. more
Pawtucket Arts Fest & Stone Soup Folk FestivalSep 11 - Sep 14Pawtucket, RI
The umbrella event for last week's RI Dragon Boat Day, the arts "festival" goes on over 3 weeks, but this weekend is the centerpiece. They'll have 80 art vendors including glassblowing and pottery demonstrations. While that's not a terribly big draw, the Stone Soup Folk Festival is a day of folk music, Sep 13, 1-5pm, and there are other arty things happening across the city this week. Slater Memorial Park, 401 Newport Avenue, Pawtucket, RI.401.724.5200. more
Feast on This" Film FestivalSep 11 - Sep 14Keene, NH
I don't expect anyone to actually go to this, but it sure is weird... A film festival dedicated to food and nutrition! At least it's free. 603-499-5606. more
Boston Film FestivalSep 12 - Sep 17Cambridge, MA
I'm sure this film festival is worth seeing, but there don't seem to be any lectures or events, although they'll have an opening night party and claim that big name restaurants will come and serve food. Kendall Landmark Theatre, One Kendall Square, Cambridge, MA.617-621-1202. more
American Heart WalkSep 13Boston, MA
If you like hearts, and don't like heart disease, consider this Yet Another Charity Walk for a really good cause. 8:30am registration, walk at 10am. 1mi, 3mi, or 6mi route along the Charles River. Hatch Shell, Esplanade, 10 Storrow Drive, Boston, MA. more
Quincy Arts FestSep 13 - Sep 14Quincy, MA
Quincy is having an "arts festival", but it's really a series of paid art workshops (plus demonstrations that are presumably free). Yoga & Wellness Center, 605 Hancock Street, Quincy, MA.617-770-2482. more

King Richard's Faire (Ren Faire)Aug 30 - Oct 19Carver, MA
This is the region's largest Renaissance Festival. It's worth a visit, especially to see the jousting, although they don't pay their stage acts much and it shows. Today I'm trying a revised style that lets you scan the blog quickly, but allows me to be chatty and make comments as well.

The Week in Weird
I never thought the festival of the week would be in Pawtucket, RI! But here it is. They'll have asian dance, crafts, martial arts, and dragonboat races all day. It's also part of a larger festival that includes magic, dance, visual arts, a film festival, and a whole lot more. 8am-5pm.
School Street Pier, School St. , Pawtucket, RI.401-724-2200. more

RI Dragonboat Races & Taiwan Day
Sep 6Pawtucket, RI
I also recommend the Brazilian Independence Day Festival, even though I've never been, because Brazilians really know how to party. The core of the event is Sunday, 12pm-6pm, in the park on Soliders Field Road across from Channel 4. They'll have a parade, music, and the usual kids stuff like balloon animals.
Artesani Park, Soldier's Field Road, 1234 Charles River, Boston, MA. more

Brazilian Independence Day Festival
Sep 3 - Sep 7Boston, MA
I've always wanted to see this one! It's a weekend festival for serious astronomy buffs, but everyone is invited. You can camp or just visit, with model rockets and nature walks in the day and serious stargazing at night.
Arunah Hill, Cummington, MA. more

Anuna Hill Days (Stargazing Weekend)

This one isn't that weird but you simply must get out to Old Sturbridge Village! It's my favorite of the re-enactment villages in New England (the others being Plimoth Plantation, Strawbery Banke, Hancock Shaker Village). Go and experience the 1840s, and then stay after dark for this nighttime treat where they fire up their kiln. (Frankly, so what, but just go already.).

Evening at the Kiln @ OSV
Sep 6Sturbridge, MA
It's more than just bull riding, it's some sort of world competition. And a good excuse to catch Cape Cod because the warm weather flees. I was on Martha's Vinyard a couple of weeks ago and it wasn't exactly culture-tastic but the beaches were nice and they have a moderate number of cutesy shops. I did NOT actually see lots of painted seashells and watercolors of sailing ships, thank goodness.

Speaking of "WTF??" events, I was stunned to learn that there's a Swiss event happening, the first I've ever heard of in New England. It's sponsored by the Swiss travel bureau and they want to promote swimming in the Charles. Because when you think Switzerland, you think beach, not mountainous landlocked country of watches and chocolate. They'll have games and such. 2-5pm.

Now for a few small little festivals that warm the heart. I love to go out and see people who are enthusiasts, and small settings can bring you closer to their culture. The Somerville Greek and Music Festival has been well-advertised and seems like fun. Fri 12-11, Sat 12-11, Sun 12-9.

It's Cambridge vs. Somerville! Italian vs. Greek! Maybe you could sneak into both festivals. This one features the healing saints, so there might be a lot of sick people there, I dunno. Enterprise Bank Parking Lot, 172 Middle Street, Lowell, MA. more

New England Culturefest

This one's probably worth seeing, but seems to be a straight concert and not so much a festival. It's free but they seem to expect a reservation. 2-7pm.
Stage Fort Park, Gloucester, MA.978.525.9093. more

Celebrate Gloucester
Sep 7Gloucester, MA
This one's small but good. It's a farm but it's in classy Concord, and they'll have hayrides. And BBQ!! Unfortunately the ponies and clown are just for kids. 12-4pm.
11 Wheeler Road, Concord, MA.978-369-4494. more

Verrill Farm Barbecue
Sep 7Concord, MA
One notch further down the classy-ness pole, this one's probably good to skip. The problem is, it's too expensive for an event where the vendors and attendees are sort of "agricultural fair", complete with racing pigs. However, it's a beautiful mountain venue, and so much fun to ride the gondola (which costs extra) or go to a hike in the nearby Wachusett Mountain state park (free). While you're in the area, check out Davis Farmland in Sterling, MA for their petting zoo and corn field maze, http://davisfarmland.com.

Also near Mt. Wachusett, this is the perfect New England home town experience, complete with a demo of crash test dummies, a pie-eating contest, martial arts, live music, arts & crafts, step dancers, you name it. This is VERY close to Davis Farmland in Sterling, MA. Fri 5-10, Sat 10-4.
Central Park, Church St at Union St, Clinton, MA.978-365-6723. more

Clinton Olde Home Day

Just for completion's sake, here's a reminder to check out Davis Farmland. They have a petting zoo, although you're supposed to have a child with you, find some family and just walk in the front gate with 'em. And they have the best maze in New England, made out of a corn field.

I generally look down on single-food events, but this one seems to pack a punch and the location is beautiful. As well as the seafood, they'll have a ton of art vendors, chef demonstrations, two stages for live music, and they'll have fireworks Saturday and a skydiving performance Sunday.
