This just in!

The Boston Zombie March. Apr 29th. Sponsored by Tufts students. www.halfwaytohuman.com. Starting 6:30pm at Davis Square, 4 College Ave, Somerville. Does not appear to be any kind of fundraiser -- just some seriously sick people whom I would like to hang out with. :)

If that's not quite weird enough for you how about "Trapped In The Closet: The R. Kelly Sing-a-long" at the Coolidge Corner Theatre. http://coolidge.org/smidapr06.html

This just in. See the Piano Drop at Baker House, a dormitory at MIT.

For those of you not sure what to make of this, they will be dropping an actual piano off the 7th floor of the dorm.

Thursday April 27th at 6pm, but show up early -- 5:30pm. A BBQ follows. I believe it's all free.

Speaking of which, the Big Old Cow Cook is coming up in 10 days... for those of you who know what I mean (wink wink)... those who don't, you aren't invited.

It turns out Jane Goodall is speaking at the Franklin Park Zoo at 1pm on Saturday April 22nd as part of Earth Day. She's that woman who did all the groundbreaking research with pimps. Oh wait, chimps. Sorry.

Heads up, Elvis Costello is performing May 10th at Symphony Hall, and Madonna is performing July 6th at the TD Banknorth Garden. Willie Nelson plays May 27th at the Bank of America Pavilion.

I'm setting up a website for all my activity stuff, www.activitycentral.org.

Swan Lake opens at the Colonial Theatre, Apr 20-23rd. If you're ever going to check out ballet, this would be a good one to try.

Murder at the Coconut Cabana is an interactive murder mystery, which opens Apr 21st and runs through August at the Tremont Playhouse. www.swaymambo.com

The New England Folk Festival is my favorite music festival of the year. It's not just a bunch of concert, there's also dance performance, and participatory sing and dance. If you play a folk instrument you can probably get in on some participatory jamming, too. Really worth checking out. www.neffa.org. Natick High School, 15 West Street, Natick, MA. April 21-23. F 7pm-11:30pm, S 9am-11:30pm, Sun 9am-5:30pm.

The Annual Harvard Intercollegiate Kendo Tournament is this weekend. It's like sabre fighting but with kendo sticks, and looks pretty cool. About as close as you can get to light sabres. :)
www.hcs.harvard.edu/~kendo/shoryuhai.php, in Cambridge. Apr 22-23.

Earth Day is this weekend! There are celebrations everywhere, notably at the Franklin Park Zoo, and the Free WBOS concert at the Hatch Shell on the Esplanade. See www.earthday.net. Its the largest celebration of Earth Day in USA. Apr 22nd

Wicked has opened at the Opera House in Boston. It's based on the Wizard of Oz, but from the "misunderstood" witch's point of view.

Women in Science, is a performance put on by the MIT Dance Theatre Ensemble. MIT Kresge Little Theatre, tonight Apr 15 8pm. www.mit.edu

Also Dane Cook is doing a comedy show tonight, April 15th, at the TD Banknorth Garden.

I went to see The Road Home: Re-Membering America, and it was worth recommending. It's a story of healing and cultural exploration as a journalist road-trips across the USA just after 9/11.

The Institute of Contemporary Art is hosting an exhibit called "Living in Motion: Design and Architecture for Flexible Dwelling", which looks worth checking out.
955 Boylston St. 617-266-5152.

The event of the week, of course, is Patriot's Day. Here are a couple of wild ideas if you're tired of (or in addition to) the Boston Marathon.

Every year there's a Battle of Lexington Re-enactment, April 17 in Lexington, at the ungodly time of 5:45am. Apparently a lot of Ye Old Battles happened at dawn. But I went last year with my crazy friend Chris, and it's totally worth it. Bring a blanket and don't be late. Show up at the Town Green, near 1900 Mass Ave in Lexington, and you'll see 2,000 other people, bleary-eyed, surrounding the town green. The smart ones have brought ladders, creating sort-of homemade bleachers behind the crowd. The British arrive, a few shots are fired, and the revolutionaries immediately flee! Go team USA! Then everyone gets a pancake breakfast, a parade of kids, plenty of historical tours, and in the afternoon, the real parade with floats and drum and fife corps. The works. ci.lexington.ma.us

Off the beaten path, meet John and Abigal Adams, as re-enacted in Quincy, with family games and activities. Details to come, but I called and they swear they are doing this annual event again. www.discoverquincy.com.

If you're going to be up at dawn, you might as well make it an all-nighter. Boston's a little lacking of all-night diners, but you can check out these three restaurants open 24 hours. The South Street Diner, at 178 Kneeland Street in Boston, which is the coolest; the International House of Pancakes in Brighton, at 1850 Soldiers Field Road; and the McDonalds at Twin City Plaza at 14 McGrath Highway in Somerville. www.southstreetdiner.com.

Meanwhile, did you know you can get a discount for arriving early to amusement parks? The two largest in New England open soon. Canobie Lake Park, in Salem NH, is an hour's drive from Boston, opening April 22. And Six Flags New England two hours west in Agawam, MA, opens April 15. You've always said you wanted to beat the lines â€" you'll have the places to yourself, and Canobie Lake even offers a early season discount. You can get a Six Flags discount through AAA or at Star Market. As impressive as the rides are at Six Flags, consider going to Canobie Lake first. They have a real woods and forest, and aren't nearly as commercial. Also, you can spend the entire day at Canobie Lake just relaxing if you choose to, with the swimming pool, the Ferris wheel, the lakeboat ride, and the gondola. www.canobie.com, and www.sixflags.com/parks/newengland

Boston Events Insider: Johnny's List of Quirky Boston Events: 04/08/06

Hi everyone,

My computer died, but I should have a new one in a week or two.

I always go straight to the crazy in this blog. Candidate One this week is the Boston Poetry Slam Championships, April 5 and 12, 8pm-late in Cambridge, at the Cantab Lounge at 738 Mass Ave. I have to confess it always seemed too arty for me. I'd show up and not “get it” and leave in the certain knowledge that the dirty unwashed masses were me. This was wrong. In fact, you really need to check this group out. The ‘readers' stand up and act out their verse as though putting on a one-act play. There's a lot of emotion, smoke and fire, nouns and verbs flying all over. It's a regular Wednesday event going until midnight or even later, but this is their big competition of the year. So go. www.slamnews.com

Candidate Two is Tomb, Wed-Sun weekly near Fenway, in Boston. Have you heard of Tomb? OK, but do you know what it is? It's like stepping onto a movie set to play Indiana Jones. Cast in the role of a famous archaeologist, you get trapped in an ancient Egyptian tomb and solve puzzles and explore to escape. With special effects and moving walls, it's the closest thing to Disneyworld anywhere near Boston. It's not too scary for kids, and your friendly guide will get you past any anxiety about brain teasers. Tomb is best done in groups, so that you can tell your friend, “you go first!”186 Brookline Ave, Boston. Wed & Thu 11am -11pm. Fri & Sat 11am-midnight. Sunday 11am-8pm. Call ahead to reserve a spot. www.5-wits.com

Third and possibly the strangest candidate is You, Singing Karaoke, in Private, daily at the Do Re Me Music Studios in Allston. Let's face it. A lot of us are shy about singing drunkenly in front of total strangers. There are cameras around and it might get in the way of your future race for the Senate. What about private karaoke, like in the film Lost in Translation? Check it out in Allston, Mon-Thu 6pm-1am, Fri-Sun 4pm-1am, at 442 Cambridge Street in Allston. For those wildly lacking inhibitions, the Milky Way Lounge & Lanes in Jamaica Plain has a live band karaoke, so you get to be a real rock star, Tuesdays at 10pm, at 403 Centre Street in JP.

Finally, and this is too weird to omit, the Beatles are back, appearing as Get Back! The Cast of Beatlemania, April 8 in Somerville, at the Somerville Theatre. www.somervilletheatreonline.com

Finally finally, did you know that many communities have free tennis courts and basketball courts, swimming pools, etc.? Check your community to see. I know that Brookline and Cambridge between them have like 20 or more.
